ELEKTRA - Richard Strauss - Hugo von Hofmannsthal - Stadttheater Klagenfurt

The Stadttheater Klagenfurt starts the 2020/2021 season as planned on September 17, 2020 with Elektra . Cesare Lievi will stage the gripping opera by Richard Strauss. In order to be able to comply with the COVID-19 regulations, the Carinthian Symphony Orchestra, conducted by chief conductor Nicholas Carter, will play on stage. Nicola Beller Carbone stars in the title role.

Under the impression of reading Nietzsche 's The Birth of Tragedy , the studies on hysteria by Josef Breuer and Sigmund Freud and Freud's Interpretation of Dreams , Hugo von Hofmannsthal wrote the one-act tragedy Elektra in 1903. In it, the bright Greekness of a Winckelmann or Goethe gives way to the dark, brutal, almost barbaric side of this civilization. Dark forces drive the characters of the story. Clytemnestra, who once killed her husband Agamemnon, who had returned from the war, in order to be able to live with his cousin Aegisth, is tormented by a bad conscience and fear of her daughter Elektra's unbridled hatred. For them, however, the expectation of bloody revenge on their mother, imagined as intoxicating, has become the only purpose in life.
