Giuseppe Verdi’s Ernani is a vibrant adaptation for the lyric stage of one of the most flamboyant dramas by the French poet. Both the composer and his librettist have combined Hugo’s verbal eloquence with the right musical temperament. Perfect example of Grand opera with chorus, the magnificent Act III is above all the first time Verdi draws the very precise contours of what is about to become a type of voice in itself: the Verdi-baritone. In Ernani he starts to focus as never before on the psychological side of his characters. All his operas after Ernani will follow the same path in his perpetual quest of the truth.

The four-act opera Ernani by Verdi was performed by the Opéra de Monte-Carlo, in 2014. Verdi based his opera Ernani on the play “Hernani” by Victor Hugo. Librettist Francesco Maria Piave wrote the texts for this well-known opera. Ever since the first performance in 1844, the opera was immensely popular. It became Verdi’s most popular opera until it was superseded by “Il trovatore,” in 1853. Today, Ernani is still a regularly performed opera all over the world. This performance, with a beautiful staging by Jean-Louis Grinda, is conducted by Daniele Callegari. Renowed solists perform with the Choeur & Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo. The solo parts are sung by Ramon Vargas, Ludovic Tézier, Alexander Vinogradov, Svetla Vassileva, Karine Ohanyan, Maurizio Pace, and Gabriele Ribis.

tage director Jean-Louis Grinda and the Opéra de Monte-Carlo present Verdi’s early smash hit opera Ernani. Ramon Vargas heads up an incredible cast in the heroic title role and maestro Daniele Callegari leads the Monte Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra in the sumptuous melodies of Verdi’s score.

Ernani marked a pivotal turning point in Verdi’s career. Only his fifth opera, it would be the first in an incredibly successful collaboration with librettist Francesco Maria Piave. It was also the first opera that Verdi was able to create entirely on his own terms: his previous successes had delivered him the authority to choose the theater, singers, subject, and libretto he wanted, and the subsequent triumph of Ernani would prove this freedom suited him! Given free reign, the young composer chose Victor Hugo’s 1830 drama Hernani, a work of unapologetic Romanticism that had already stolen the hearts of audiences across Europe. In setting Hugo’s play, Verdi and Piave stick closely to the original text. The plot turns around Elvira, a fragile heroine desired by three men—the tenor Ernani (the prototypical passionate lover), the baritone Carlo (King of Spain), and the bass Silva (the abusive uncle)—who ferociously battle for her hand...

Vibrant adaptation of the Hugo drama to the canons of lyrical art, with Ernani , Verdi and his librettist Piave, have preserved the verbal eloquence of the playwright while musically retaining his flame and his meaning. Here the composer abandons the patriotic vein of Nabucco and I Lombardi to glorify individual freedom. The title role is an outlaw, a type of character dear to Verdi and which he will portray with consistency throughout his career, such as Carlo in I Masnadieri , Manrico in Trouvère , and Alvaro in Force du destin .. Representative of the scale of grand opera with chorus, the magnificent tableau of Act III is above all the act where the composer precisely draws the contours and gives birth to what will become an archetype of voice: the baritone-Verdi.

Created in 1844 in Venice between Nabucco and Macbeth , Ernani marks a major stage in the composer's work, a starting point towards the psychological development of his characters, his subsequent production will no longer depart from this quest for truth.
