The shadow of Napoleon Bonaparte hangs over the 5th Concerto and the 3rd Symphony. Beethoven had admired General Bonaparte when he seemed destined to free Europe from tyranny. The admiration ceased when he undertook wars of reconquest and the composer withdrew his dedication to Napoleon. The concerto nevertheless remains associated with the image of the Emperor and the dramatic intensity that was the history of the first French empire. The “Eroica” Symphony suffered the same fate since the dedication to Bonaparte was withdrawn when he was crowned Emperor.

L'ombre de Napoléon Bonaparte plane sur le 5e Concerto et la 3e Symphonie. Beethoven avait admiré le général Bonaparte lorsque celui-ci semblait destiné à libérer l’Europe de la tyrannie. L’admiration cessa quand celui-ci entreprit des guerres de reconquête et le compositeur retira sa dédicace à Napoléon. Le concerto reste néanmoins associé à l’image de l’Empereur et à l’intensité dramatique que fut l’histoire du premier empire français. La Symphonie « Héroïque » subit le même sort puisque la dédicace à Bonaparte fut retirée quand il se fit sacrer Empereur.
