Eigentlich wollte Beethoven seine 3. Sinfonie Napoleon widmen. Doch als dieser sich selbst zum Kaiser krönte, hat der Komponist angeblich wutentbrannt die Widmung getilgt. Er überschrieb sein Werk mit »Eroica – Heroische Sinfonie, komponiert, um die Erinnerung an einen großen Mann zu feiern«. In seiner Chorfantasie feierte er indes Heldenhaftes im Kunstgedanken, während Judith Weir »Heroisches« als Prinzip physischer Kraft definiert.

Beethoven actually wanted to dedicate his 3rd symphony to Napoleon. But when he crowned himself emperor, the composer allegedly deleted the dedication in a rage. He titled his work "Eroica - Heroic Symphony Composed to Celebrate the Memory of a Great Man". In his choral fantasy, however, he celebrated the heroic in artistic thought, while Judith Weir defines "heroic" as a principle of physical power.
