Opera Eva je najznámejšou operou romantického českého skladateľa Josefa Bohuslava Foerstera. Vznikla na jeho vlastné libreto vytvorené podľa hry Gabriely Preissovej Gazdina roba v roku 1889. Premiéra o rok neskôr spôsobila rozruch – naturalistická dráma zo života ľudu na moravskom Slovácku totiž predstavuje priamy protiklad k rozmarnému duchu vidieckej dediny, ktorý prezentoval Smetana vo svojej Predanej neveste. Foerster sa pritom nesnažil o hudobný folklorizmus tak, ako to bolo typické pre mnohé diela 19. a prelomu 19. a 20. storočia. Snažil sa vytvoriť univerzálnu hudobnú drámu, ktorá by sa mohla odohrávať kedykoľvek a kdekoľvek. Vidiecke prostredie vytvára kolorit príbehu a determinuje konanie postáv. Pod vplyvom hlbokého citového zaujatia, ktoré dalo podnet k tvorbe, vznikla lyrická, romanticky ladená opera. Má klasickú opernú stavbu s uzavretými číslami, pre charakteristiku postáv využíva príznačné motívy. Dominantnou postavou diela je Eva, ktorá ide za svojou láskou a šťastím proti pravidlám spoločnosti. Opúšťa svojho manžela Samka a odchádza žiť bez sobáša so svojím milencom Mánkom. Keď zistí, že sa Mánek kvôli nej nerozvedie, skočí zo zúfalstva do Dunaja. Opera Eva sa teda končí tragicky, avšak v súlade so skladateľovým presvedčením, že hudba nie je schopná vyjadrenia negatívnych pocitov. Smrť je katarziou, očistením, Eva umiera s vidinou raja. Štátna opera sa k tomuto titulu vracia i symbolicky po 60 rokoch, keďže bola vôbec prvou inscenáciou, ktorá bola na jej javisku uvedená.

The opera Eva is the most famous opera by the romantic Czech composer Josef Bohuslav Foerster. It was based on his own libretto based on Gabriela Preissova 's play Gazdina roba in 1889. The premiere a year later caused a stir - the naturalistic drama from the life of the people in Moravian Slovakia is in direct contrast to the whimsical spirit of the rural village presented by Smetana in his Bartered Bride. At the same time, Foerster did not strive for musical folklorism, as was typical for many works of the 19th and the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. He tried to create a universal musical drama that could take place anytime and anywhere. The rural environment creates the color of the story and determines the actions of the characters. A lyrical, romantically tuned opera was created under the influence of a deep emotional interest that gave impetus to the work. It has a classic opera structure with closed numbers, it uses typical motifs to characterize the characters. The dominant character of the work is Eva, who pursues her love and happiness against the rules of society. She leaves her husband Samek and goes to live unmarried with her lover Mánek. When he finds out that Mánek will not divorce her, he jumps into the Danube out of desperation. Opera Evathus ends tragically, but in accordance with the composer's belief that music is incapable of expressing negative feelings. Death is a catharsis, a purification, Eve dies with a vision of paradise. The State Opera symbolically returns to this title after 60 years, as it was the very first production that was presented on its stage.
