In the second of her "Expedition Concerts" – a new format introduced in her first season in charge of the Konzerthausorchester Berlin – Joana Mallwitz presents a detailed illustrated introduction to Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 4 "Italian" before conducting a complete performance of the work. With the help of musical examples at the piano and from the orchestra, she explores what it is that makes this symphony – shot through with the impressions garnered on Mendelssohn's extensive travels through Italy – such a concert hall favourite, placing it in the context of the composer's life and times.
