Après tant d’ouvrages sombres et tragiques, Verdi décide à la fin de sa vie de laisser parler sa verve comique. S’inspirant de personnages shakespeariens hauts en couleur, il nous offre avec Falstaff un opéraplein d’humour et de tendresse, et mené tambour battant !

A Windsor, Alice et Meg s’offusquent : elles ont toutes deux reçu un mot doux de Lord Falstaff, qui ne verrait pas d’un mauvais oeil qu’elles trompent leur mari pour lui ! Avec leurs amies et leurs familles, elles décident de jouer un bon tour au vieux fat… Ultime opéra d’un Verdi désormais octogénaire, Falstaff est un véritable bijou d’humour et de finesse. Avec son génial librettiste Boito, Verdi retrouve Shakespeare, qui lui a déjà inspiré deux chefs-d’oeuvre : Macbeth en 1847 et Otello en 1887. Mais ici, le musicien décide d’abandonner les drames qui ont fait sa renommée pour donner au public une oeuvre légère, toute de drôlerie et de piquant. Laissant libre cours à son inspiration, Verdi compose des pages tour à tour pétillantes, lyriques, sensuelles… Un véritable condensé de tout son art, d’une délicate modernité, ce chant du cygne du vieux maître s’amuse de thèmes aussi divers que le désir, la fidélité conjugale, mais aussi les privilèges liés à certaines classes sociales, et leur fin annoncée…

With their friends and their families, they decide to play a good trick on the old fop… The ultimate opera by a Verdi now in his eighties, Falstaff is a real gem of humor and finesse. With his brilliant librettist Boito, Verdi finds Shakespeare, who has already inspired him with two masterpieces: Macbeth in 1847 and Otelloin 1887. But here, the musician decides to abandon the dramas that made him famous to give the public a light work, full of humor and piquancy. Giving free rein to his inspiration, Verdi composes pages that are alternately sparkling, lyrical, sensual... A true compendium of all his art, with a delicate modernity, this swan song by the old master plays with themes as diverse as desire, conjugal fidelity, but also the privileges linked to certain social classes, and their announced end...
