This is the incredible evening offered by the Lille Opera, which comes out of its walls to broadcast live on the big screen and throughout the region the picaresque adventures of the knight Falstaff staged by the talented Denis Podalydès in nearly 25 places in Hauts-de-France.

That's what it's called ending on a high note...
In 1893, Verdi was 80 years old, he wrote 27 operas – with some success – and even if it meant composing one last, he would like it to be a comedy. Continuing, after Othello and Macbeth , his companionship with Shakespeare, he attaches himself to the grotesque figure of Falstaff .
Drunkard and thug, womanizer and troublemaker, fat, gluttonous, but capable of the frankest affections and the most bitter sorrows… An eminently comic figure, of undeniable popularity, whom Shakespeare summoned in several of his plays , until giving him the star in The Merry Wives of Windsor …“Falstaff is a glorious enjoyer and, at the same time, he is of constant kindness. In the horizon of fiction, few giants are good men,” explained actor and director Orson Welles. It is this endearing silhouette, melancholic as much as comical, that, like Welles before him, Denis Podalydès wants to bring out.
A double twilight: that of the truculent knight and that of the composer, who plays with age and illness to experience a final triumph.

En 1893, Verdi a 80 ans, il a écrit 27 opéras – avec un certain succès – et quitte à en composer un dernier, il voudrait que ce soit une comédie. Continuant, après Othello et Macbeth, son compagnonnage avec Shakespeare, il s’attache à la figure grotesque de Falstaff.

Ivrogne et malfrat, coureur de jupons et fauteur de troubles, gros, goinfre, mais capable des affections les plus franches et des chagrins les plus amers… Une figure éminemment bouffe, d’une popularité sans démenti, que Shakespeare convoqua dans plusieurs de ses pièces, jusqu’à lui donner la vedette dans Les Joyeuses Commères de Windsor…

« Falstaff est un glorieux jouisseur et, à la fois, il est d’une bonté constante. Dans l’horizon de la fiction, peu de géants sont des hommes de bien », expliquait l’acteur et réalisateur Orson Welles. C’est cette silhouette attachante, mélancolique autant que bouffonne, que, comme Welles avant lui, Denis Podalydès veut faire apparaître.

Un double crépuscule : celui du truculent chevalier et celui du compositeur, qui se joue de l’âge et de la maladie pour connaître un dernier triomphe.
