You knew Felix, but what do you know about Fanny? She was the elder sister of the composer of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, bathed like him in the society of the Enlightenment and the early Romantics, where she frequented Goethe and Heine, and was an admired pianist in their pres-tigious salons. However, her vocation as a composer was constantly thwarted by her family, which was nevertheless among the most enlightened of its time, and which considered that a decent woman could not embark on a public career without dis-honour. This was the fate of many female creators of the time, who were silenced, and whose works they nevertheless managed to write are now coming to light. With Felix et Fanny, Jérémie Rhorer and Le Cercle de l’Harmonie mirror the scores of the brother and sister, united as much by their mutual affection, despite the inequality established between them, as by their common passion for the theatre. Although neither of them ever wrote a complete opera, they set to music and songs the most beautiful plays of the European repertoire, from Shakespeare to Schiller and of course Goethe. And if the grace and fantasy of Felix remain irresistible, the modernism of Fanny, which sometimes seems to open the door to Wagner, will be a discovery for many.

Sœur aînée du compositeur du Songe d’une nuit d’été, baignée comme lui dans la société des Lumières et des premiers romantiques où elle fréquenta Goethe et Heine, pianiste admirée dans leurs prestigieux salons, sa vocation de compositrice se vit constamment contrariée par cette famille pourtant parmi les plus éclairées de son temps, qui estimait qu’une femme convenable ne pouvait se lancer sans déshonneur dans une carrière publique. Destin de bien des créatrices du temps, réduites au silence, et dont les œuvres qu’elles sont malgré tout parvenues à écrire reviennent aujourd’hui au jour. Avec Felix et Fanny, Jérémie Rhorer et le Cercle de l’Harmonie mettent en miroir les partitions du frère et de la sœur, unis autant par leur affection mutuelle, en dépit de l’inégalité établie entre eux, que par leur passion commune pour le théâtre. Si ni l’un, ni l’autre n’écrivirent jamais d’opéra complet, ils mirent en musique et offrirent à la voix les plus belles pièces du répertoire européen, de Shakespeare à Schiller en passant naturellement par Goethe. Et si la grâce, la fantaisie de Felix demeurent irrésistibles, le modernisme de Fanny, qui semble parfois ouvrir la porte à Wagner, sera pour beaucoup une découverte.
