By placing a giant black ring in the center of the stage, casting a menacing shadow over the singers and dominating the scene, director, set and costume designer Stefano Poda takes the story of the endlessly searching Faust to an abstract, seemingly futuristic level, and not only ensures the most fascinating stage moments due to the sophisticated lighting control.
Also thanks to the excellent and enthusiastic cast, Poda manages to convince his audience. Charles Castronovo in the title role deserves special mention for his brilliant acting and gentle singing. Russian bass Ildar Abdrazakov - a staple of every major opera house around the world - embodies the demonic Méphistophélès. As the innocent young girl Marguerite we see the Moldovan soprano Irina Lungu, who demonstrates her skills with a crystal-clear timbre. The performance will be directed by the General Music Director of the Teatro Regio Gianandrea Noseda, who has been in office since 2007 and who has taken on this opera jewel for the first time. He conducts the orchestra of the Teatro Regio Torino with fine nuances and a high level of musical tension.
