The revolution has broken out and the once privileged couple Almaviva are on the run with their servants Figaro and Susanna. With them is Serafin, the grown up son of the Almavivas, and Angelika, the count's ward. But the escape fails: A shady major arrests the group. As a result, what was believed to be safe reveals itself to be fragile: Count Almaviva tries to maintain his usual standard of living, so he gets caught up in frauds and ends up temporarily in prison. Figaro seems to be able to come to terms with the new times. But there are cracks in her relationship with Susanna: Because Figaro refuses to have the child that Susanna longs for, she cheats with Cherubino, who runs a nightclub in town. In the meantime, the major is doing everything to further plunge the Almaviva family into disaster ...

Opera history knows the bustling barber Figaro and his environment from works such as "The Barber of Seville" (Rossini) or "The Marriage of Figaro" (Mozart), both of which are based on comedies by the French Beaumarchais. In the mid-1930s, the playwright and novelist Ödön von Horváth continued the events surrounding Figaro, his bride Susanna, the Count Almaviva and the adolescent enthusiast Cherubino. Horváth's piece "Figaro lets divorce" finally became for the Russian-British composer Elena Langer and the English opera director and author Sir David Pountney the basis for a new "Figaro" opera in 2015 .
