Ter gelegenheid van de 40ste verjaardag van het NIRAS – de Nationale Instelling voor Radioactief Afval en verrijkte Splijtstoffen – creëert het Belgian National Orchestra een nieuwe voorstelling in samenwerking met beeldend kunstenaar Eva L’Hoest, een experte in 3D-vormgeving en computer graphics. Zij onderzoekt met de beeldtaal die haar eigen is en aan de hand van vier werken uit het twintigste-eeuwse klassieke muziekrepertoire de uitdagingen die het aanwezige nucleaire afval stelt voor zowel de huidige als voor de komende generaties.

Ongebreideld geloof in één enkele godheid, dat is wat de farao Akhnaten in de gelijknamige opera van Philip Glass tijdens de Hymn for the Sun belijdt. De menselijke inventiviteit kent geen grenzen, ook al zijn de gevolgen van sommige uitvindingen niet te voorzien. De mogelijkheden van deze geëlektrificeerde tijden wakkeren ons nu eens aan tot wilde helledansen, wiegen ons dan weer zoet in slaap, net zoals de vuurvogel in Stravinsky’s indrukwekkende ballet.

Met Liquid Marble van de Zweedse componist Anders Hillborg duiken we rechtstreeks in de reactorvaten van de kerninstallaties die onze samenleving onder hoogspanning zetten. “Hillborgs muziek is die van het nucleaire tijdperk,” schreef de Evening Standard ooit: “met houtblazers die microtonaal op en neer gorgelen als een stel opgewonden sciencefictionrobots”. Sibelius’ symfonische gedicht De zwaan van Tuonela verplaatst ons naar een ander tijdperk waar mensen in hun huidige vorm niet meer bestaan en de natuur alles terug heeft overgenomen.

Voorafgaand aan dit scenische concert voert chef-dirigent Antony Hermus ook nog de eerste beweging van Mahlers Tiende symfonie uit. Altviolen openen dit adagio met een aan Wagners Tristan und Isolde herinnerende melodie. Een verrassend polyfone passage mondt daarna uit in een koraal dat op zijn beurt plaats ruimt voor een afschrikwekkend doodsakkoord, bestaande uit negen op elkaar gestapelde tertsen.

On the occasion of the 40th anniversary  of ONDRAF/NIRAS – the National Institute for Radioactive Waste and Enriched Fissile Materials – the Belgian National Orchestra is creating a new performance in collaboration with visual artist Eva L'Hoest, an expert in 3D design and computer graphics. Using her own visual language and using four works from the twentieth-century classical music repertoire, she investigates the challenges that the present nuclear waste poses for both current and future generations.

Unbridled belief in a single deity is what the pharaoh Akhnaten professes in Philip Glass's opera of the same name during the Hymn for the Sun. Human inventiveness knows no bounds, even if the consequences of some inventions are unforeseeable. The possibilities of these electrified times sometimes stir us to wild dances of hell, then lull us sweetly back to sleep, much like the firebird in Stravinsky's impressive ballet.

With Liquid Marble by the Swedish composer Anders Hillborg, we dive directly into the reactor vessels of the nuclear installations that put our society under high voltage. “Hillborg's music is that of the nuclear age,” the Evening Standard once wrote, “with woodwinds gurgling up and down microtonally like a bunch of excited science fiction robots.” Sibelius' symphonic poem The Swan of Tuonela transports us to another era where humans no longer exist in their present form and nature has taken over everything again.

Prior to this scenic concert, chief conductor Antony Hermus will also perform the first movement of Mahler's Tenth Symphony . Violas open this adagio with a melody reminiscent of Wagner's Tristan und Isolde . A surprisingly polyphonic passage then culminates in a chorale that in turn gives way to a terrifying death chord, consisting of nine superimposed thirds.
