The medieval sequence "Stabat Mater" is an in-depth contemplation of Mary standing at the foot of the cross as she witnesses her son die in agony. A person can hardly experience much greater suffering. Medieval poetry leads us deep into this suffering of the Blessed Mother Mary and doesn't say anything nice; This is also the reason for its “success”: countless times it has been set to music by famous composers. I encounter a lot of suffering around me during these years; Pandemic and its consequences as well as wars certainly contribute to this. This suffering cannot simply be wiped away, either by words or by music. But: "A sorrow shared is a sorrow halved". By looking at it, trying to put it into words, and contemplating it together through experiencing such music together, one can begin to cope with it ´,

 

Francis Poulenc's musical adaptation from 1950 is probably one of the most dramatic settings and captures the pain and the torn heart of the suffering mother in a unique way and with unprecedented vibrancy. The approximately 35-minute work is of enormous content and emotional density. The five-part choir is the main actor, the solo soprano sets its own accents. The concerto is complemented by a number of works from the 20th century that relate to this work and this text in very different ways. Claude Debussy's "Fêtes" from the "Nocturnes" cycle written in 1900 prepares the listener musically for Poulenc. At the same time, I also hear the hustle and bustle of Palm Sunday in this piece as a happy beginning of Jesus' passion, which was then so tragic. Finally Richard Strauss: his “Four Last Songs” based on poems by Hermann Hesse and Joseph von Eichendorff were written in Switzerland two years before Poulenc's “Stabat mater”. They are an examination of the themes of death and farewell, against the background of the past world war and in anticipation of one's own death. The melody of the last of the four songs - "Im Abendrot" - is reminiscent of the beginning of the "German Requiem" by Johannes Brahms: "Blessed are those who are suffering". Die mittelalterliche Sequenz „Stabat Mater“ ist eine tiefgehende Betrachtung Marias, wie sie - am Fuß des Kreuzes stehend - miterlebt, wie ihr Sohn qualvoll stirbt. Viel größeres Leid kann ein Mensch wohl kaum erleben. Die mittelalterliche Dichtung führt uns tief in dieses Leid der Gottesmutter Maria hinein und redet nichts schön; hierin liegt auch ihr „Erfolg“ begründet: unzählige Male wurde sie von berühmten Komponisten vertont. Viel Leid begegne ich in diesen Jahren um mich herum; Pandemie und ihre Folgend sowie Kriege tragen sicherlich das ihre dazu bei. Dieses Leid kann nicht einfach weggewischt werden, weder durch Worte noch durch Musik. Aber: „Geteiltes Leid ist halbes Leid“. Indem man es ansieht, es in Worte zu fassen versucht, und es durch das gemeinsame Erleben solcher Musik gemeinsam betrachtet, kann man anfangen es zu bewältigen ´, und es vielleicht irgendwann, nach vielen Tränen, auch überwinden.

 

Francis Poulencs musikalische Umsetzung aus dem Jahr 1950 ist wohl eine der dramatischsten Vertonungen und fängt den Schmerz und das zerrissene Herz der leidenden Mutter in einmaliger Weise und unerhörter Lebendigkeit ein. Das etwa 35minütige Werk ist inhaltlich und emotional von enormer Dichte. Der fünfstimmige Chor ist Hauptakteur, der Solo-Sopran setzt eigene Akzente. Das Konzert ergänzen einige Werke aus dem 20. Jahrhundert, die sich in ganz unterschiedlicher Weise auf dieses Werk und diesen Text beziehen. Claude Debussys „Fêtes“ aus dem im Jahr 1900 entstandenen „Nocturnes“-Zyklus bereitet den Hörer musikalisch auf Poulenc vor. Gleichzeitig höre ich in diesem Stück auch den Palmsonntag-Trubel als noch fröhlichen Beginn der dann so tragischen Passion Jesu. Samuel Barbers berühmtes „Adagio for Strings“ (oder in seiner vokalen Umsetzung „Agnus Dei") entstand kurz vor Beginn des zweiten Weltkriegs und wurde vielfach als das „traurigste Musikstück“ aller Zeiten bezeichnet. Schließlich Richard Strauss: seine „Vier letzten Lieder“ nach Gedichten von Hermann Hesse und Joseph von Eichendorff entstanden zwei Jahre vor Poulencs „Stabat mater“ in der Schweiz. Sie sind eine Auseinandersetzung mit den Themen Tod und Abschied, vor dem Hintergrund des vergangenen Weltkrieges und in Erwartung des eigenen Todes. Die Melodie des letzten der vier Lieder - „Im Abendrot“ – erinnert dabei an den Beginn des „Deutschen Requiems“ von Johannes Brahms: „Selig sind, die da Leid tragen“.
