Il Belcanto: Bellini, Rossini, Donizetti

Il Belcanto è un’espressione artistica rigidamente regolamentata da norme e precetti ben definiti. Il termine belcanto non si riferisce al concerto di “canto bello” e non ha una relazione specifica con la qualità vocale.
Da un punto di vista estetico, la singolarità di questo genere d’arte musicale risiede nella sua duttilità nel muoversi in atmosfere e mondi remoti, lontani dalla materialità terrena. Le vicende musicate dai compositori belcantistici si collocano in una dimensione astratta che lascia libero sfogo all’immaginazione, discostandosi dai dettami psicologici terreni, e consegnandosi agli impulsi simbolici rievocati da gesti metaforici.
Su questi presupposti nasce un teatro aperto a risvolti inaspettati, spesso contraddittori, a evocare la follia, a giocare con il paradosso.
L’interprete belcantista è un artista di straordinarie capacità creative e di immedesimazione in personaggi ed accadimenti non riconducibili a esperienze di vita riconoscibili. Il pubblico dell’opera belcantistica, che non ritrova sulla scena uno spaccato di realtà ed emozioni sperimentate, come avviene nel melodramma tardo romantico e verista, non è libero di interpretare arbitrariamente gli avvenimenti dal momento che è l’autore stesso a decidere, mediante espedienti inconfondibili, quando è il momento di piangere o di gioire, di sdegnarsi o compiacersi, di ribellarsi o commuoversi; può lasciarsi trasportare dalle emozioni elevate a valori universali e andare oltre la storia narrata sulla scena per crearne una sua propria.
Il compositore belcantista ricorre generalmente a un canto astratto, imperniato su un virtuosismo in grado di servirsi a fini espressivi di ogni nuance vocale. I virtuosi deputati a questo genere sono capaci non soltanto di riportare correttamente passaggi molto impegnativi e veloci, ma, soprattutto, bilanciare il fiato per sostenere lunghe frasi legate e ornare la nota con abbellimenti come trilli, messe di voce, accenti. Il melodramma belcantistico persegue la sublimazione di sentimenti e circostanze perché affida il compito di commuovere alla voce umana, lo strumento di comunicazione più completo e ricco di possibilità espressive.
Vincenzo Bellini è l’ultimo compositore d’opera lirica che professa l’ideologia del belcantismo, portato al culmine dal più anziano Gioacchino Rossini. Come Rossini, anche Bellini non ripropone sul palcoscenico la realtà terrena ma rende in musica semplici frammenti di storie, espedienti per evocare i sentimenti che segnano le strade dell’esistenza: amore e morte, gioia e dolore.
Il belcantismo di Bellini differisce da quello rossiniano mostrandosi come un anello di congiunzione con il lirismo romantico di Donizetti, Verdi, Gounod e Massenet. Anche in Bellini le emozioni appassionano l’ascoltatore lasciandosi trasportare dalla magia di suggestioni diverse da quelle proposte dal dialogo drammaturgico concreto. Ma il vocabolario impiegato è diametralmente differente: Rossini sperimenta una vocalità ricercata, che si basa su figurazioni peculiari della musica strumentale: scale, arpeggi, quartine ascendenti e discendenti. Bellini ricorre invece a melodie di grande significato che abbracciano il comune sentire, ma lo oltrepassano proiettandolo oltre, a una creatività geniale che guarda al trascendente più che all’effimero.

La trilogia italiana di W. A. Mozart

Dall’incontro tra W. A. Mozart e il librettista italiano Lorenzo Da Ponte, sono nati tre capolavori della storia della musica: Le nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni e Così fan tutte, composte tra il 1786 e il 1790. Ognuna di queste tre opere ha lasciato un segno indelebile nella storia della musica: tracce così profonde da ispirare sempre nuove analisi e interpretazioni. Ciascuno dei tre titoli ha una doppia natura, di dramma e di commedia. Sono lavori nei quali l’ambivalenza è continua, esplicitata nei libretti o sottintesa nella musica. Opere sfaccettate, così com’è la vita.

Bel canto is an artistic expression strictly regulated by well-defined rules and precepts. The term bel canto does not refer to concert "bello singing" and does not have a specific relationship with vocal quality.
From an aesthetic point of view, the singularity of this genre of musical art lies in its flexibility in moving in remote atmospheres and worlds, far from earthly materiality. The events set to music by bel canto composers are placed in an abstract dimension that leaves free rein to the imagination, departing from earthly psychological dictates, and surrendering to the symbolic impulses evoked by metaphorical gestures.
On these assumptions, a theater is born that is open to unexpected, often contradictory implications, to evoke madness, to play with paradox.
The bel canto interpreter is an artist with extraordinary creative abilities and identification with characters and events that cannot be traced back to recognizable life experiences. The audience of bel canto opera, which does not find on the stage a cross-section of reality and experienced emotions, as happens in late romantic and realist melodrama, is not free to arbitrarily interpret the events since it is the author himself who decides, through expedients unmistakable, when it is time to cry or rejoice, to be indignant or pleased, to rebel or be moved; he can let himself be carried away by emotions elevated to universal values ​​and go beyond the story told on stage to create his own.
The bel canto composer generally uses abstract singing, based on a virtuosity capable of using every vocal nuance for expressive purposes. The virtuosos responsible for this genre are capable not only of correctly reporting very demanding and fast passages, but, above all, balancing the breath to support long linked phrases and adorning the note with embellishments such as trills, masses of voice, accents. Bel canto melodrama pursues the sublimation of feelings and circumstances because it entrusts the task of moving to the human voice, the most complete communication tool rich in expressive possibilities.
Vincenzo Bellini is the last opera composer who professes the ideology of bel canto, brought to its peak by the older Gioacchino Rossini. Like Rossini, Bellini also does not represent earthly reality on the stage but turns simple fragments of stories into music, expedients to evoke the feelings that mark the paths of existence: love and death, joy and pain.
Bellini's bel canto differs from that of Rossini, showing itself as a link with the romantic lyricism of Donizetti, Verdi, Gounod and Massenet. Even in Bellini, emotions excite the listener, allowing themselves to be carried away by the magic of suggestions other than those proposed by concrete dramaturgical dialogue. But the vocabulary used is diametrically different: Rossini experiments with a refined vocality, which is based on peculiar figurations of instrumental music: scales, arpeggios, ascending and descending quatrains. Bellini instead uses melodies of great meaning that embrace common feeling, but go beyond it by projecting it further, to a brilliant creativity that looks to the transcendent rather than the ephemeral.
