Gianni Schicchi Puccini

The cloak is a French "grand guignol" that Puccini saw in Paris and captured the imagination of the plot's openly naturalistic nature. In the play, a justifiably jealous husband takes revenge on his wife’s lover. Puccini sought to stick to the very fashionable French style at the time. The first version of the textbook did not prove to be harsh and ordinary enough for the maestro, so he contacted an Italian writer living in Paris to help stifle the dialogues with the missing "spoken language" twists. Gianni Schicchi is Puccini’s only comedy opera, so it’s understandable that the master was excited about the task. He is said to have sent the following poem to his librettist when he composed the operas of Triptych:
"Finishing the gloomy cloak / cheer be the lesson / I hope you don't get socked / if I work at Schicchin first."
