Jaké to je být u zrodu nové opery, nastudovat ji s Orchestrem Národního divadla a zažít ve zlaté kapličce světovou premiéru? What is it like to be at the birth of a new opera, to stage it with the National Theatre Orchestra and experience the world premiere at the Golden Chapel? We asked Italian conductor Giancarlo Andretta, a long-time collaborator of director David Radok and a friend of the composer, author of the new opera Don Buoso, Jan Kučera. Let´s watch it together.

A dark comedy about the Donati mafia clan, the plot predates Puccini's famous one-act opera Gianni Schicchi and recounts how the death of Don Buoso could have happened. DON BUOSO / GIANNI SCHICCHI - interview with conductor Giancarlo Andretta

The historical figure of Gianni Schicchi had already intrigued Dante Alighieri, who even mentioned the fraudster in the famous epic poem Divina commedia: the medieval Florentine knight reputedly forged the will of the wealthy Buoso Donati, for which he was condemned to Hell. Yet Gianni Schicchi only became generally known due to Giacomo Puccini and his comic opera. The plot starts with the relatives of the late Don Buoso gathered to learn of their respective inheritances. There are rumours that he left the family in the lurch and bequeathed the largest part of his immense fortune to a monastery. Bypassing Don Buoso’s will thus suggests itself as a natural solution …  Is everything really as funny as Puccini indicates by his humorous, rollicking and brilliant music, teeming with his characteristic melodies, including the famed aria “O mio babbino caro”? What kind of people are the relatives of the deceased man?

And what was Buoso Donati like? Are Puccini’s characters just colourful figures from medieval Florence, or are we much more similar to them than we may think? And didn’t Dante overlook someone else in Hell, someone having a hand in the story? Such questions inspired the distinguished Czech stage director David Radok to create a brand-new, darkly comic opera, set at the time preceding Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi and depicting the possible circumstances of Don Buoso’s death … He and the composer Jan Kučera have written for the National Theatre in Prague a piece whose story and music derive from Puccini’s renowned one-acter, while shifting the narrative into a rather different light.

Historku o florentském chytrákovi Giannim Schicchim znal dobře už Dante Alighieri – dokonce se o něm zmiňuje ve své slavné Božské komedii: Schicchi prý zfalšoval ve svůj prospěch závěť bohatého Buosa Donatiho a za to přišel do pekla. Do širokého povědomí však Gianni Schicchi vstoupil teprve díky Giacomu Puccinimu a jeho operní komedii. Po smrti Dona Buosa Donatiho se, jak už to bývá, shromáždili jeho příbuzní, aby se přihlásili o svůj díl z Buosova nemalého dědictví. Něco se šušká o tom, že Buoso své příbuzné obešel a největší část svého majetku odkázal jakémusi klášteru… Co takhle pro změnu obejít Dona Buosa a jeho závěť… Je to všechno opravdu taková legrace, jak by se dalo soudit z Pucciniho groteskní, bravurní a jiskřivé hudby, v níž samozřejmě nechybí ani typicky pucciniovské melodie v čele s hitem „O mio babbino caro“? Co je to vlastně za lidi, tihle příbuzní bohatého nebožtíka Dona Buosa? A kdo to asi ten Don Buoso Donati byl? Jsou to všechno jenom pitoreskní postavičky ze středověké Florencie, nebo k nim máme mnohem blíže, než bychom si mysleli?

Nepřehlédl Dante v pekle ještě někoho dalšího, kdo má v téhle „historce“ prsty? Právě takové otázky inspirovaly vynikajícího českého operního režiséra Davida Radoka ke vzniku zcela nové, černé operní komedie, která dějově předchází Pucciniho Giannimu Schicchimu a líčí, jak to celé se smrtí Dona Buosa mohlo být… Spolu se skladatelem Janem Kučerou napsali pro Národní divadlo operní novinku, která po dějové i hudební stránce čerpá z proslulé Pucciniho aktovky, ale zároveň posunuje celý příběh do poněkud jiného světla.
