Caesar and Cleopatra, passion and struggle
Set against the backdrop of the Roman Civil War of 49-45 BC, Giulio Cesare (Julius Caesar) discovers that his rival Pompeo has been brutally executed by the Egyptian king Tolomeo. While Pompeo's widow Cornelia grieves and his son Sesto vows revenge, Tolomeo's sister and wife Cleopatra decides to seduce Cesare to gain his support and power.

 

BAROQUE
The sound world of Giulio Cesare breathes baroque through the old instruments such as the harpsichord, recorder and viola da gamba, which color the orchestral sound. The most virtuoso arias full of vocal fireworks stand next to the subtlest Handel ever wrote. Giulio Cesare is in excellent hands with conductor Emmanuelle Haïm, a specialist in this repertoire and renowned for her many appreciated CD recordings. With her own orchestra, Le Concert d'Astrée, the popular conductor is making her debut with Dutch National Opera.

In the highly physical and visually impressive theater language of the Spanish opera and theater director Calixto Bieito, this Giulio Cesare promises to be an exciting total work of art. Bieito has a collection of great stage personalities at his disposal, including two rising stars who are making their debut with Dutch National Opera; French soprano Julie Fuchs as Cleopatra and Canadian-Italian mezzo-soprano Emily d'Angelo as Sesto. In addition, the French countertenor and celebrated Handel interpreter Christophe Dumaux will return to DNO as Giulio Cesare.
