In 2013, English composer Anna Clyne received a special commission to open the famous Last Night of the Proms in London, with the Masquerade Overture, which draws inspiration from the outdoor music played in 18th-century London parks. Clyne uses a lavish orchestra to conjure images of masked revelry and the extravagant ambiance of such grand gatherings. As the sonorous waves swell from the orchestra pit, keen listeners may catch echoes of Juice of Barley, an old Irish country dance song. Composed in 1940 and distinctly neoclassical, Joaquin Rodrigo’s Concerto d’Aranjuez conjures a dreamlike Spain to help forget the horrors of the Civil War that preceded World War II. His slow movement has traversed the globe in various arrangements. Dvorák’s Symphony No. 8, with its themes reminiscent of folk music, stands as a genuine anthem to Bohemia, creating an irresistible atmosphere of exaltation and peace.

Commandée à la compositrice anglaise Anna Clyne en 2013 pour ouvrir la fameuse Last Night of the Proms de Londres, l’Ouverture Masquerade s’inspire des musiques de plein air jouées dans les parcs londoniens au XVIIIe siècle. Elle utilise un riche orchestre évoquant les déguisements masqués et le décor grandiloquent de tels rassemblements. À travers les grandes houles de l’orchestre on peut reconnaître, Juice of Barley, une vieille danse country irlandaise. Composé en 1940 et résolument néo-classique, le Concerto d’Aranjuez de Joaquin Rodrigo évoque une Espagne de rêve pour faire oublier les horreurs de la Guerre civile préludant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Son mouvement lent a fait le tour du monde dans toutes sortes d’arrangements. Avec ses thèmes proches de la musique populaire, la Symphonie N° 8 de Dvorák est un véritable hymne à la Bohême dans un irrésistible climat d’exaltation et de paix.
