Les normes de la symphonie sont pulvérisées dans cette partition mythique, à laquelle un imprésario offrit son surnom « des Mille », et que Mahler conçut comme un hymne à l’étincelle créatrice, au génie de l’humanité et à l’immensité de l’univers. 

Avec son effectif pléthorique, ses deux chœurs mixtes, son chœur d’enfants, ses huit solistes, son souffle dramatique et liturgique, la Symphonie n° 8 de Mahler est l’un des « monstres sacrés » du répertoire. Sa création à Munich, en 1910, valut un triomphe au compositeur et fit d’emblée entrer la partition dans la légende.

Révolutionnaire, puisque la voix y intervient de bout en bout, la Huitième s’apparente davantage à une immense cantate qu’à une symphonie au sens habituel. Elle ne comprend que deux mouvements. Le premier, qui s’ouvre dans une déflagration d’énergie, est conçu autour de l’hymne latin Veni creator spiritus, et célèbre la volonté créatrice. L’immense second mouvement, aux problématiques plus humaines – voire humanistes – est fondé pour sa part sur Le Second Faust de Goethe : hymne à l’amour, à la puissance du féminin, il reconfigure le matériau musical du premier mouvement et sert à la fois d’Adagio, de Scherzo et de Finale à une œuvre dans laquelle Mahler, de manière très consciente, repoussa toutes les limites.

This legendary score, famously dubbed ‘of a Thousand’ by an impresario, threw symphonic norms to the wind. Mahler conceived it as an ode to the creative spark, the genius of humanity and the immensity of the universe.

With its plethora of forces, two mixed choirs, children’s choir, eight soloists, and dramatic and liturgical inspiration, Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 is one of the ‘sacred beasts’ of the repertoire. Its premiere in Munich in 1910 was a triumph for the composer and made the score an instant legend.

Revolutionary in that it includes voice from beginning to end, the Eighth is more like an immense cantata than a symphony in the usual sense. It consists of only two movements. The first, which opens with a burst of energy, is built around the Latin hymn Veni creator spiritus, offering a spiritual celebration of creative will. The immense second movement, with its more human—even humanistic—perspectives, is based on Goethe’s Faust II. This ode to love and the power of the feminine reconfigures the musical material of the first movement, serving at once as Adagio, Scherzo and Finale for a work in which Mahler consciously pushed all boundaries.
