Mahler’s major Symphony No.5 is the main feature of this Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar de Venezuela concert, which also did an outstanding recording of the piece with Deutsche Grammophon. Dudamel, one of the most fervent interpreters of South-American music, will also be adding a work unfamiliar to most European audiences, Julián Orbón’s Tres versiones sinfónicas (1954).
A worthy product of el Sistema , this Venezuelan program for teaching children classical music like no other, Gustavo Dudamel burst onto the European stages with the enthusiasm of a meteor. His breakthrough at the Bamberg Conducting Competition in 2004 marked the start of a successful career. The thirty-year-old, who has been practicing for more than fifteen years, has in recent years led a number of leading orchestras, whether as guest or principal conductor. The Gothenburg Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and, of course, the Simón-Bolívar Youth Orchestra have made him their musical director. It is at the head of the latter, “his” orchestra, that he performs at the Philharmonie at the start of 2015, a year after their monumental concert dedicated to Berlioz's Requiem at Notre-Dame-de cathedral. -Paris in January 2014, which he wanted to dedicate to one of his masters who had just died, the great Claudio Abbado.

L’immense Cinquième Symphonie de Mahler forme le plat de résistance de ce concert de l’Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar de Venezuela, qui en a donné un enregistrement remarqué chez Deutsche Grammophon. Dudamel, l’un des plus fervents interprètes de la musique sud-américaine, y ajoute une œuvre méconnue du public européen, les Tres versiones sinfónicas (1954) de Julián Orbón.

Digne produit d’el Sistema, ce programme vénézuelien d’apprentissage de la musique classique par les enfants à nul autre pareil, Gustavo Dudamel a déboulé sur les scènes européennes avec la fougue d’un météore. Sa percée lors du Concours de direction d’orchestre de Bamberg en 2004 a sonné le début d’un parcours jalonné de succès. Le trentenaire, qui pratique depuis plus d’une quinzaine d’années, est passé ces dernières années à la tête de nombre d’orchestres de premier plan, que ce soit comme chef invité ou titulaire. L’Orchestre de Göteborg, le Los Angeles Philharmonic ou, bien entendu, l’Orchestre des jeunes Simón-Bolívar en ont ainsi fait leur directeur musical. C’est à la tête de ce dernier, “son” orchestre, qu’il se produit à la Philharmonie en ce début d’année 2015, un an après leur concert monumental consacré au Requiem de Berlioz à la cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-Paris en janvier 2014, qu’il avait voulu dédier à l’un de ses maîtres qui venait tout juste de mourir, le grand Claudio Abbado.
