»Die Sechste ist sein allerpersönlichstes Werk und ein prophetisches obendrein« – so Gustav Mahlers Ehefrau Alma. Und in der Tat: Mit seiner apokalyptischen Klangsprache, die nur vorübergehend aufgehellt wird, scheint die Symphonie große persönliche Katastrophen Mahlers vorwegzunehmen: die Diagnose eines Herzleidens, den Tod seiner Tochter, berufliche Fehlschläge. Es ist eine Musik, die in Abgründe blickt. Interpret dieser Aufführung ist mit Gustavo Dudamel einer der weltweit populärsten Dirigenten, der bei den Berliner Philharmonikern bereits mehrfach mit Mahler-Symphonien zu erleben war.

And in fact, with its apocalyptic tonal language, which is only temporarily lightened, the symphony seems to anticipate Mahler’s great personal catastrophes: the diagnosis of a heart condition, the death of his daughter, and professional failures. It is music that looks into the abyss. Gustavo Dudamel, one of the world’s most popular conductors, presents this performance and has already performed Mahler symphonies on several occasions with the Berliner Philharmoniker.
