Und in der Tat: Mit seiner apokalyptischen Klangsprache, die nur vorübergehend aufgehellt wird, scheint die Symphonie große persönliche Katastrophen Mahlers vorwegzunehmen: die Diagnose eines Herzleidens, den Tod seiner Tochter, berufliche Fehlschläge. Es ist eine Musik, die in Abgründe blickt. Interpret dieser Aufführung ist mit Gustavo Dudamel einer der weltweit populärsten Dirigenten, der bei den Berliner Philharmonikern bereits mehrfach mit Mahler-Symphonien zu erleben war.
