Conductor Joongbae Jee, the first Asian conductor who won the Best Conductor Prize at Germany’s Operetta Awards in 2012, will perform with the Gyeonggi Philharmonic Orchestra. The music he chose for the Orchestra is Symphonie fantastique by Louis-Hector Berlioz.

Symphonie fantastique was created when Berlioz was suffering from his unrequited love. He fell in love with actress Harriet Smithson, who did Romeo and Juliet, and sought to win her love, only to be refused coldly. Later, with the pain of a broken heart, he composed Symphonie fantastique.

The symphony is a program symphony with five movements: I. Daydreams – Passions, II. A Ball, III. Scene in the Fields, IV. March to the Scaffold, and V. Dream of a Witches’ Sabbath. 

In addition, the string quartet Esmé Quartet will perform with the Orchestra Absolute Jest by American composer John Adams (2012). Esmé Quartet is the first team consisting of only female musicians that won the first prize after 1979 at the 2018 Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition, the world’s most prestigious chamber music competition. In particular, Esmé Quartet has mainly performed chamber music works on the domestic stage, but this will be the first time that the team will perform with an orchestra, raising public’s expectations.

As a concerto for string quartet and orchestra, Absolute Jest incorporates the music of Ludwig van Beethoven into the composer’s original arrangement. Beethoven’s symphony and string quartet motifs keep appearing in the music.
