The dramatic possibilities offered by the text of the Requiem have long piqued Berlioz's interest. In March 1837, he received a commission from the French government to write a requiem to commemorate the escape of King Louis Philippe from assassination on the anniversary of the July Revolution, and so he set about writing with great enthusiasm. The work expresses a longing for faith, awareness of this need and worship; his own lack of faith somehow expresses through music the eternal hopes and fears of the human race. Here and there we catch glimpses of peace, but the prevailing tone is tragic. Amidst all the contrasts of form and mood, the central and continuous motif of bewilderment that humanity feels when faced with the enigma of death is preserved. The mighty requiem, which requires a large ensemble, including sixteen paired peacocks, four gongs and four groups of brass, will performThe Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir of the Slovenian Philharmonic, the Ave Chamber Choir, the Virtuosi Festival Choir, the Munich Philharmonic Choir under the direction of Charles Dutoit, one of the most sought-after conductors in the world, who has performed with the best orchestras and soloists on the world's most prestigious stages during his long career. Even as a young man, Herbert von Karajan invited him to work with the Vienna State Opera, which took him to the most outstanding opera stages, such as the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden and others. Branko Robinšak, champion of the SNG Opera and Ballet of Ljubljana, will perform as a soloist .

Dramatične možnosti, ki jih ponuja besedilo Rekviema, so že dolgo vzbujale Berliozovo zanimanje. Marca 1837 je od francoske vlade prejel naročilo, naj napiše rekviem v spomin na pobeg kralja Ludvika Filipa pred atentatom na obletnico julijske revolucije, in tako se je z velikim navdušenjem lotil pisanja.
