Ist Natur schön oder gefährlich? Ist sie beherrschbar oder unberechenbar? Braucht der Mensch sie zum Überleben oder sie den Menschen zum Fortbestand? Derartige Fragen führen direkt hinein in die aktuelle Debatte über Klimawandel und Ausbeutung der Erde. Sie bildeten aber auch die Grundlage etlicher Musikwerke, die sich seit dem Zeitalter der Aufklärung vermehrt mit Natur auseinandersetzten. Schon Joseph Haydn, ein Meister der Naturdarstellung in Tönen, schlug in seinem frühen Sinfonie-Zyklus »Die Tageszeiten« den Bogen von der idyllischen, dankbar stimmenden Wirkung eines Sonnenaufgangs bis zum erschreckend hilflosen Gefühl bei Aufzug eines Abendgewitters.

In der Romantik ging dieses ambivalente Verständnis dann fast vollends in der Verklärung der Natur zum idealen Rückzugsort auf. Benjamin Britten blickte in seiner Serenade op. 31 aus finsteren Kriegszeiten 1943 wehmütig und nachdenklich auf diese Jahrhunderte wechselvoller Natur- und Nachtbetrachtungen in der Dichtkunst zurück. Und Wolfgang Rihm im Jahr 1980? »Wie eine Natur wird ein Musikfetzen ausgebeutet, bis er tot ist«, lautet sein tragisch aktueller Kommentar zum Streicherstück »Nature Morte – Still Alive«…

Is nature beautiful or dangerous? Is it controllable or unpredictable? Do people need them to survive or do they need them to survive? Such questions lead directly into the current debate about climate change and the exploitation of the earth. But they also formed the basis of a number of musical works that have increasingly dealt with nature since the Age of Enlightenment. Even Joseph Haydn, a master of depicting nature in music, drew a line in his early symphony cycle »The Times of the Day« from the idyllic, grateful effect of a sunrise to the frighteningly helpless feeling of an evening thunderstorm.

In the Romantic period, this ambivalent understanding was almost entirely resolved in the transfiguration of nature as the ideal retreat. In his Serenade op. 31 from Dark Times of War 1943, Benjamin Britten looked back wistfully and thoughtfully on these centuries of eventful observations of nature and night in poetry. And Wolfgang Rihm in 1980? "Like nature, a scrap of music is exploited until it's dead," is his tragically topical comment on the string piece "Nature Morte - Still Alive"...
