Hanjo by Japanese composer Toshio Hosokawa is a chamber work on the theme of waiting. The libretto is based on the play of the same name by Yukio Mishima, in which the author refers to the tradition of Japanese Noh theatre. The story is about the geisha Hanako, who has been waiting for the return of her beloved Yoshio for years. However, waiting for her has dragged her into a world of madness, to the point that when her beloved reappears, she doesn't recognize him. Reality doesn't match the image Yoshio had made over the years. The composer Hosokawa has been able to probe the boundaries between madness and reason, transposing an apparently simple story into a canvas of iridescent sounds between a dreamy lightness and harsh reality. The score develops by drawing a sound carpet that accompanies the painful transformation process of the protagonist, the central theme of Hanjo.

Hanjo del compositore giapponese Toshio Hosokawa è un’opera da camera sul tema dell’attesa. Il libretto si basa sull’omonimo dramma di Yukio Mishima, in cui l’autore si rifà alla tradizione del teatro giapponese Nō. La storia parla della geisha Hanako, che da anni aspetta il ritorno dell’amato Yoshio. L’attesa l’ha però trascinata in un mondo di follia, al punto che quando l’amato ricompare, lei non lo riconosce. La realtà non corrisponde all’immagine che si era fatta di Yoshio in tutti quegli anni. Il compositore Hosokawa ha saputo sondare i confini tra follia e ragione, trasponendo una storia apparentemente semplice in una tela di suoni cangianti tra una leggerezza trasognata e la dura realtà. La partitura si sviluppa disegnando un tappeto sonoro che accompagna il doloroso processo di trasformazione della protagonista, tema centrale di Hanjo.
