Hansel and Gretel
Hansel and Gretelis one of the best-known fairy tales from the collection of the Brothers Grimm, and no other fairy tale has ever come to the opera stage with such sustained success. The premiere of Engelbert Humperdinck's opera took place shortly before Christmas 1893 under the direction of the young Richard Strauss in Weimar. Inspired by the musical language of Richard Wagner, whom he assisted as a student in Bayreuth, but also by folk and children's songs, Humperdinck composed a catchy work that is popular with adults and children alike. The director Robert Carsen puts the fairy tale at the Zurich Opera House into the Christmas season: for the impoverished family of the broom maker Peter, who have no real home and suffer from hunger, it is a dreary time. Hansel and Gretel are chased out of the house by their mother Gertrude: They should find something to eat. But the two children get lost and end up in a wondrous fantasy world: in the dangerously tempting realm of the witch Rosina Leckermaul, all of Hansel and Gretel's wishes suddenly seem to come true. But the witch has an appetite for two delicious "Brätel"...

In this revival, Olga Kulchynska and Deniz Uzun can once again be experienced as Hansel and Gretel, Sarah Castle and Martin Winkler or Ruben Drole sing their parents, the musical director is Paul Daniel.

Hänsel und Gretel ist eines der bekanntesten Märchen aus der Sammlung der Brüder Grimm, und kein anderes Märchen ist je mit so nachhaltigem Erfolg auf die Opernbühne gekommen. Die Uraufführung von Engelbert Humperdincks Oper fand kurz vor Weihnachten 1893 unter der Leitung des jungen Richard Strauss in Weimar statt. Inspiriert von der musikalischen Sprache Richard Wagners, dem er als Student in Bayreuth assistierte, aber auch von Volks- und Kinderliedern, komponierte Humperdinck ein eingängiges Werk, das bei Erwachsenen und Kindern gleichermassen beliebt ist. Der Regisseur Robert Carsen versetzt das Märchen am Opernhaus Zürich in die Weihnachtszeit: Für die verarmte Familie des Besenbinders Peter, die kein richtiges Zuhause hat und Hunger leidet, ist es eine trostlose Zeit. Hänsel und Gretel werden von ihrer Mutter Gertrud aus dem Haus gejagt: Sie sollen etwas Essbares auftreiben. Doch die beiden Kinder verlaufen sich und geraten in eine wundersame Fantasiewelt: Im gefährlich-verlockenden Reich der Hexe Rosina Leckermaul scheinen sich auf einmal alle Wünsche von Hänsel und Gretel zu erfüllen. Doch die Hexe hat Appetit auf zwei leckere «Brätelchen»…

Als Hänsel und Gretel sind in dieser Wiederaufnahme erneut Olga Kulchynska und Deniz Uzun zu erleben, Sarah Castle und Martin Winkler bzw. Ruben Drole singen ihre Eltern, die musikalische Leitung hat Paul Daniel.
