"Don't you know the horrifyingly gloomy place, don't you know that the evil one lives there?": The parents hastily set off into the forest to save Hansel and Gretel from the crispy witch Rosina Leckermaul. As feared, the children got lost in the forest and came across the gingerbread house. They cannot resist the sweet temptation - and fall into the trap of the witch, who literally loves to eat children...

As in most stories by the Brothers Grimm, everything turns for the better in Engelbert Humperdinck's setting of the fairy tale: Until then, however, Humperdinck's romantic music takes the children deep into the dark forest of legends: Here it conjures up magical creatures and calls on 14 angels to protect their siblings and carries the witch through the air on her broomstick. Today, Humperdinck's classic, which premiered in Weimar in 1893, is part of the Advent wreath at Christmas time - and since then has been taking young and young-at-heart audiences all over the world into the realm of fairy tales.
