The opera tells the famous fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm: the mother sends Hansel and Gretel into the forest to collect berries. The children get lost and not only meet the sand and dew figures, but also fall into the clutches of the shady Raisin Tastymaul, who turns out to be the evil crispy witch and captures the siblings in order to bake them gingerbread. At the last moment, however, Hansel and Gretel manage to outwit the greedy witch...

Actually, Adelheid Wette had only asked her brother Engelbert Humperdinck to set her fairy tale play to music for private theater performances. In the end, it became a fantastic opera for large orchestra, which the composer himself – in his great admiration for Richard Wagner – described as the “Kinderstubenweihfestspiel”. The premiere, conducted by none other than Richard Strauss, was a sensational success, and the work has since become an integral part of the opera house's repertoire.
