This name can be trusted: Those who expect a musical romanticism reminiscent of "Der Freischütz" in Carl Maria von Weber's second clarinet concerto, one of the showpieces for virtuoso and expressive instrumentalists, are not mistaken. Even the dark atmosphere of the Wolf's Glen can be sensed in the second movement. For Sebastian Manz, an international soloist, chamber musician, and principal clarinetist of the SWR Symphony Orchestra, this offers a broad playing field. And Franz Schubert's magnificent C major symphony, which Chief Conductor Nicholas Milton will present afterwards, is also among the distinctive compositions in music history. Robert Schumann later remarked, "Among us, the symphony has had an effect like none since Beethoven." What can one say? Its impact endures to this day.
