In the 1840s, Verdi worked on three of Schiller's plays as models for an opera: "Giovanna d'Arco" (after "The Maid of Orleans"), "I Masnadieri" (after "The Robbers") and "Luisa Miller" ( after "Cabal and Love"); around twenty years later came the culmination of Verdi's Schiller settings with "Don Carlos".

After the great success of his opera "Ernani" in London, Verdi was commissioned to write a new stage work for Her Majesty's Theatre. The house had specialized in the Italian repertoire and Verdi was on the way to becoming the leading Italian opera composer. The premiere took place in July 1847 under Verdi's direction; the main roles were sung by great stars of the time such as Luigi Lablache, Italo Gardoni and the legendary Jenny Lind (Amalia). The score contains many delightful passages and shows Verdi's development towards artistic maturity. Solo cellist in the London orchestra was the famous Alfredo Piatti; In his honour, Verdi composed the overture as a small concert piece for cello and orchestra.
