Under the terrible dictatorship of Cromwell, in England in the 17th century, the Puritans advocated an austere way of life, turned to the Bible. The story of a love born in contrary winds offers Bellini a subject certainly conducive to the exploitation of the springs of the nascent romantic opera, but above all allows the exploitation of the various human passions. Elvira  's scene of madness will be matched only by that of Lucia di Lammermoor , exactly contemporary.

Based on a true story, Bellini's last work was composed slowly, over nine months. The master corrected the libretto and reworked the music on Rossini's advice. The creation, at the Théâtre-Italien in Paris, was a triumph. I Puritani demands an exceptional cast. The vocal quartet, originally made up of Grisi, Rubini, Tamburini and Lablache, is subjected to the most perilous airs of the Belcantist repertoire. Their success was at the origin of the nickname of Quatuor des Puritans which has remained famous until today. But between cavatines and cabalettes, the composer, king of melody and sweetness, has some of the most beautiful arias of Italian opera in store for us!

Sous la terrible dictature de Cromwell, en Angleterre au XVIIe siècle, les Puritains prônent un mode de vie austère, tourné vers la Bible. L’histoire d’un amour né dans des vents contraires offre à Bellini un sujet certes propice à l’exploitation des ressorts de l’opéra romantique naissant, mais permet surtout l’exploitation des diverses passions humaines. La scène de folie d’Elvira n’aura d’égale que celle de Lucia di Lammermoor, exactement contemporaine.

Basée sur une histoire réelle, la dernière oeuvre de Bellini fut composée lentement, en neuf mois. Le maître corrigea le livret et remania la musique sur les conseils de Rossini. La création, au Théâtre-Italien à Paris, fut un triomphe. I Puritani exige une distribution d’exception. Le quatuor vocal, à l’origine formé de Grisi, Rubini, Tamburini et Lablache, est soumis aux airs les plus périlleux du répertoire belcantiste. Leur succès fut à l’origine du surnom de Quatuor des Puritains resté célèbre jusqu’à nos jours. Mais entre cavatines et cabalettes, le compositeur, roi de la mélodie et de la suavité, nous réserve quelques uns des plus beaux airs de l’opéra italien !
