In a disadvantaged neighborhood of Los Angeles, the lives of seven young people intertwine: a delinquent in full questioning about the validity of his choices, an undocumented South American mother, an idealistic lawyer, a journalist, a policeman doubting his sexual inclinations, a family planning worker, a Don Juan preacher. An earthquake shakes the city and the crisis causes many upheavals in the destiny of these protagonists.

Cette histoire est inspirée du témoignage d’un survivant du tremblement de terre qui a secoué Los Angeles en 1994. John Adams et sa librettiste ont su tisser une histoire réelle avec une musique très métissée, un sujet touchant de près les jeunes d’aujourd’hui, avec des sonorités qui leurs sont familières en une organisation subtile, intelligente et pleine de sens.
