Coming home from the Trojan War, the Cretan King Idomeneo finds himself in distress. In order to survive, he swears to the sea god Neptune to sacrifice the first person he will meet after his rescue. After a successful crossing, Idomeneo is horrified: of all people, his son Idamante is the first he meets after being rescued. Idomeneo, who is supposed to make the sacrifice of his son himself, wants to prevent the killing for all in the world ...

IDOMENEO introduces the series of great master operas by Mozart. Shortly before leaving Salzburg and with precisely this aim composed for the Munich court, the 24- year-old composerpulls outall the stops of his skills. With his third opera seria, Mozart reshaped the traditional framework of the genre and radically renewed the form believed to be dead by focusing on the inner workings of the protagonists. The great choirs modeled on Gluck and the virtuoso treatment of the orchestra make IDOMENEO Mozart's most colorful score - he considered it his best operaallhis life. Conceived as a political drama of the conflict between duty to the gods and loyalty to human beings, IDOMENEO belongs to Mozart's most innovative music theater works.
