The press and audiences alike rave about every appearance by the young German-Russian pianist Igor Levit, who is now a member of the international keyboard elite. Although he is in step with the times (he is extremely active on social media and busy with civic engagements), he is an artist who prefers depth to undue haste. Although his personal passion is the German repertoire (he is performing Brahms’ Concerto No. 2 with the Wiener Philharmoniker at the start of the season), Bach, and the Viennese classicism of Beethoven which have made his name, he is not averse to pursuing less well-trodden paths as is the case in this recital. He will perform two piano arrangements of hits from the symphonic repertoire: the Adagio from Mahler’s Symphony No. 10 and Beethoven’s Third. But he also returns to his roots with Klavierstücke from Brahms’ opus 119, the musician’s “lullabies of my suffering” and his last compositions for piano.

La presse et le public fêtent chacune des apparitions du jeune pianiste germano-russe Igor Levit, qui fait désormais partie de l’élite internationale du clavier. Bien que très à l’aise dans son époque (il est extrêmement présent sur les réseaux sociaux et dans de nombreux engagements civiques), c’est un artiste qui préfère la profondeur à la précipitation. Si son cœur bat avant tout pour le répertoire allemand (il donne justement le deuxième concerto de Brahms avec les Wiener Philharmoniker en début de saison), pour Bach et le classicisme viennois de Beethoven qui ont fait sa réputation, il ne dédaigne pas s’aventurer sur quelques chemins plus rares, comme pour ce récital où il propose deux arrangements pour piano de deux tubes du répertoire symphoniques que sont l’Adagio de la symphonie n° 10 de Mahler et la troisième de Beethoven. Mais il ne saurait oublier ses fondamentaux et y retourne avec ces Klavierstücke de l’opus 119 de Brahms, ces « berceuses de ma souffrance » selon les mots du musicien et les ultimes propos qu’il confia au piano.
