It is literally love at first sight, and yet it seems hopeless at first that Count Almaviva could win the adored Rosina for himself, since she is being carefully kept hidden from the world by her guardian Doctor Bartolo; because he himself had an eye on the beauty and her dowry. With wit, the usual little tricks in the service of a good cause and a good portion of happy coincidences, Figaro succeeds in tricking Bartolo and giving Almaviva and Rosina a boost in love.

In just 26 days, between December 1815 and January 1816, Gioachino Rossini wrote his Barber of Seville, or Useless Prudence. "After the storm of the premiere was over," Rossini later recalled, "the barber shaved the Romans' beard so well that I was carried in triumph." for the first time in sixteen years and experienced a wildly acclaimed premiere directed by artistic director Markus Trabusch: "This is how theater should always be!" (O-Ton, 14.3.2018). The Barber of Seville can also be seen in the Big House in the 18/19 season, again with Marzia Marzo (Rosina), Roberto Ortiz (Count Almaviva) and Daniel Fiolka (Figaro) in the leading roles.
