Die Geschichte ist turbulent: Ein alter Griesgram will sein Mündel heiraten, um an dessen beträchtliches Erbe zu gelangen, und trifft dabei jede erdenkliche Vorkehrung, um der hübschen Rosina den Weg in die Außenwelt – und damit zu möglichen jungen Liebhabern – zu versperren. Doch längst hat der Graf Almaviva seine Liebe zu ihr entdeckt. Mit Hilfe des umtriebigen Barbiers Figaro will er dem Alten ein Schnippchen schlagen, Rosina für sich gewinnen und überdies noch sicherstellen, dass nicht sein Titel oder Reichtum, sondern allein die Liebe die junge Frau in seine Arme führt. Keine leichte Aufgabe für Figaro, denn auch die Gegner scheuen keine Mühe … Am Ende siegt die Liebe, und es stellt sich heraus, dass alle Vorsicht nutzlos war!

Dass diese Geschichte viel Potential zur Komik mit sich bringt, ist völlig klar. „Aber am komischsten ist die Musik“ – so Regisseurin Katharina Thalbach. „Von der Artistik und dem Tempo Rossinis war ich wie vom Donner gerührt. ... Bei den Proben merke ich immer wieder, wie mir die Musik in die Beine fährt und ich unwillkürlich mittanze. Das flirrt, prickelt und macht einfach Spaß. Und dieses Lebensgefühl soll bei unserer Produktion möglichst auch so rüberkommen.“ Im farbenfrohen Ambiente eines südländischen Badeortes entfaltet Thalbach ein turbulentes Panoptikum um den umtriebigen Figaro, dessen Erfindungsreichtum am Ende alle Hindernisse überwindet.

Pierre Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais (1732 – 1799) erfand die Figur des ebenso intriganten wie gewitzten Barbiers und widmete ihm eine ganze Komödien-Trilogie, von denen vor allem die ersten beiden Teile LE BARBIER DE SEVILLE OU LA PRECAUTION INUTILE (1775) und LA FOLLE JOURNEE OU LE MARIAGE DE FIGARO (1778) weltberühmt wurden. Der dritte Teil, L’AUTRE TARTUFFE OU LA MERE COUPABLE, der 1792 erschien, trat hinter den Erfolg ihrer Vorgänger, vielleicht bedingt durch die Wirren der Französischen Revolution, eher zurück. Obwohl das revolutionäre Potenzial vor allem des zweiten Teils der Komödie in der genialen Vertonung Mozarts – DIE HOCHZEIT DES FIGARO – am deutlichsten spürbar wird, besitzt auch der Barbier des ersten Teils viel respektloses Temperament, das ihn zur Hauptfigur einer komischen Oper geradezu prädestiniert. Giovanni Paisiello hatte 1782 mit seiner Vertonung des BARBIERE einen durchschlagenden Erfolg, so dass Rossini gegen ein scheinbar übermächtiges Vorbild antrat, als er beschloss, denselben Stoff erneut zum Gegenstand einer komischen Oper zu machen. Und doch gelang ihm 34 Jahre nach Paisiellos Triumph die vielleicht witzigste und temporeichste Opera buffa der Operngeschichte.

„Es war ganz Rossinische Weise, wie sie sich im BARBIER VON SEVILLA am lieblichsten offenbart. Die Verächter italienischer Musik, die auch dieser Gattung den Stab brechen, werden einst in der Hölle ihrer wohlverdienten Strafe nicht entgehen, und sind vielleicht verdammt, die lange Ewigkeit hindurch nichts anderes zu hören als Fugen von Sebastian Bach.“ (Heinrich Heine)

The story is turbulent: an old curmudgeon wants to marry his ward in order to get hold of his considerable inheritance, and he takes every conceivable precaution to prevent the pretty Rosina from getting out into the outside world – and thus from possible young lovers. But Count Almaviva has long since discovered his love for her. With the help of the busy barber Figaro, he wants to outsmart the old man, win Rosina for himself and also make sure that it is not his title or wealth, but love alone that draws the young woman into his arms. Not an easy task for Figaro, because even the opponents spare no effort... In the end, love wins and it turns out that all caution was useless!

It is quite clear that this story has a lot of potential for comedy. “But the funniest thing is the music” – says director Katharina Thalbach. "I was thunderstruck by Rossini's artistry and tempo. ... During the rehearsals I notice again and again how the music hits my legs and I involuntarily dance along. It shimmers, tingles and is simply fun. And this attitude towards life should come across in our production as much as possible.” In the colorful ambience of a Mediterranean seaside resort, Thalbach unfolds a turbulent panopticon about the bustling Figaro, whose inventiveness ultimately overcomes all obstacles.

Pierre Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais (1732 – 1799) invented the character of the scheming and witty barber and dedicated an entire trilogy of comedies to him, of which the first two parts in particular are LE BARBIER DE SEVILLE OU LA PRECAUTION INUTILE (1775) and LA FOLLE JOURNEE OU LE MARIAGE DE FIGARO (1778) became world famous. The third part, L'AUTRE TARTUFFE OU LA MERE COUPABLE, which appeared in 1792, was less successful than its predecessors, perhaps due to the turmoil of the French Revolution. Although the revolutionary potential of the second part of the comedy in particular is most clearly felt in Mozart's ingenious setting - THE WEDDING OF FIGARO - the barber in the first part also has a great deal of irreverent temperament that almost predestines him to be the main character of a comic opera. Giovanni Paisiello's 1782 setting of the BARBIERE was a resounding success, so that Rossini was up against a seemingly overpowering model when he decided to make the same material the subject of a comic opera again. And yet, 34 years after Paisiello's triumph, he managed what is perhaps the funniest and most dynamic opera buffa in operatic history.
