La farce est un genre théâtral aujourd’hui disparu. Eduardo le savait aussi, qui en mettant en scène les farces de son père, Eduardo Scarpetta, faisait presque toujours des « adaptations libres », admettant implicitement l’impossibilité de perpétuer littéralement – à l’ère du moderne « théâtre de mise en scène » – les méthodes, les contenus et l’efficacité de ce répertoire, au moins aussi ancien que la commedia dell’arte. La farce était une forme théâtrale ancienne et simple, très populaire : elle reposait sur des intrigues schématiques, des allusions au monde contemporain, des parodies, des petites tromperies, un jeu chargé, une posture frontale des acteurs, des rôles principaux confiés à de véritables « vedettes » capables de ravir les spectateurs. Dans les années 1810, à l’imitation du Vaudeville français, les plus grands compositeurs – se conformant aux demandes du public – se mettent à écrire des partitions courtes et très amusantes pour des scènes de théâtre d’opéra, confiées à des chanteurs « drôles » au talent extraordinaire. Au cours de ces années, la farce « parlée » est également devenue une « farce musicale ». Donizetti en a écrit au moins une douzaine, presque toutes pour Naples. Voilà : à Naples, dans les années de Donizetti, la farce a peut-être atteint son plus grand succès. Une anecdote pour aider à comprendre le potentiel de ce type de spectacle : en mai 1836 à Naples on craignait l’arrivée de l’épidémie de choléra du nord de l’Italie. Les théâtres royaux ont été fermés, tandis que les théâtres indépendants essayaient de survivre d’une manière ou d’une autre. Mais le public avait peur de la contagion et donc le Teatro Nuovo, sans une programmation d’attrait, était sur le point d’échouer avec de nombreux artistes qui ne savaient plus comment survivre. Le célèbre Donizetti décida donc en toute hâte d’écrire le livret et la musique d’une nouvelle farce, La Cloche de l’Apothicaire, à offrir à ses amis du Teatro Nuovo. Le public, attiré par le nom et la générosité du Maestro, vient en nombre : le succès est tel que la fortune du Théâtre se redresse, échappant à la faillite.

Mais – comme je l’ai dit – la farce (musicale et autre) n’est plus à la mode aujourd’hui : à la fin du XIXe siècle, elle avait presque disparue, même dans la patrie de Naples. Le dernier éclair de ce genre a eu lieu entre les années quarante et le début des années soixante du XXe siècle, lorsque la cinématographie italienne a commencé à exploiter avec grand succès les histoires anciennes et les anciens masques d’acteurs brillants tels que – par exemple – Nino Taranto, Peppino De Filippo, Tina Pica, Pietro De Vico et bien sûr Totò. Ici : J’ai donc voulu penser à La Cloche comme une expression de ce monde, de cette tradition. Puisque le décor pour ceux qui mettent en scène est le premier outil pour trouver des liens efficaces entre le public au théâtre et l’action sur scène, j’ai voulu situer l’action à l’époque de la farce cinématographique, dans l’imaginaire des Totò et des De Sica. En un mot : j’ai pris la dernière image d’une longue tradition, cette sorte d’instant figé avant l’oubli, car c’est la seule imagerie qui nous soit parvenue, le seul décor qui – ne serait-ce qu’au premier coup d’œil – peut immédiatement évoquer au public d’aujourd’hui les nuances, les climats, le style de ce monde perdu. 

C’était donc le point de départ. En montant le spectacle et en portant cette approche, j’ai donc demandé aux interprètes de rappeler l’âge d’or de la farce, également dans le style de jeu. Pour une fois, je voulais trahir Stanislavskij, Antoine et être un anti-metteur en scène : c’est-à-dire oublier les intellectualismes, les sous-textes et les métapsychologies. Jouer sous les feux de la rampe ? Devant le public ? Avec des gestes chargés ? Avec des costumes, du maquillage et des perruques de personnages ?

Oui : parce que ce que je voudrais montrer au public genevois, c’est la voie d’une pratique théâtrale qui n’est plus connue. Et ainsi honorer le son, l’élégance, le charme et la poésie d’une noble langue perdue.

The farce was an old and simple theatrical form, very popular: it was based on schematic plots, allusions to the contemporary world, parodies, small deceptions, heavy acting, a frontal posture of the actors, main roles entrusted to real "stars" capable of delighting the spectators. In the 1810s, in imitation of French Vaudeville, the greatest composers – conforming to the demands of the public – set about writing short and very amusing scores for opera theater scenes, entrusted to “funny” singers of extraordinary talent. During these years, the "spoken" farce also became a "musical farce". Donizetti wrote at least a dozen, almost all of them for Naples. Here it is: in Naples, in the years of Donizetti, farce achieved perhaps its greatest success. An anecdote to help understand the potential of this type of spectacle: in May 1836 in Naples there was fear of the arrival of the cholera epidemic from northern Italy. The Royal Theaters were closed, while independent theaters somehow tried to survive. But the public was afraid of contagion and therefore the Teatro Nuovo, without attractive programming, was on the verge of failure with many artists who no longer knew how to survive. The famous Donizetti therefore decided in haste to write the libretto and the music for a new farce, The Apothecary's Bell, to offer to his friends at the Teatro Nuovo. The public, attracted by the name and the generosity of the Maestro, came in large numbers: the success was such that the fortunes of the Theater recovered, escaping bankruptcy.

But – as I said – stuffing (musical and otherwise) is no longer fashionable today: by the end of the 19th century it had almost disappeared, even in the homeland of Naples. The last flash of this kind took place between the forties and the beginning of the sixties of the 20th century, when Italian cinematography began to exploit with great success the old stories and the old masks of brilliant actors such as – for example – Nino Taranto, Peppino De Filippo, Tina Pica, Pietro De Vico and of course Totò. Here: So I wanted to think of La Cloche as an expression of this world, of this tradition. Since the set for those who direct is the first tool to find effective links between the audience in the theater and the action on stage, I wanted to situate the action at the time of the cinematographic farce, in the imagination of Totò and De Sica. In a nutshell: I took the last image of a long tradition, this sort of frozen moment before oblivion, because it is the only imagery that has come down to us, the only setting that – if only 'at first glance – can immediately evoke for today's audience the nuances, the climates, the style of this lost world. 

So that was the starting point. By mounting the show and carrying this approach, I therefore asked the performers to recall the golden age of farce, also in the acting style. For once, I wanted to betray Stanislavskij, Antoine and be an anti -director: that is to say forget about intellectualisms, sub-texts and metapsychologies. Playing in the limelight? In front of the public? With loaded gestures? With character costumes, makeup and wigs?

Yes: because what I would like to show the Geneva public is the path of a theatrical practice that is no longer known. And thus honor the sound, the elegance, the charm and the poetry of a noble lost language.
