Similar to the heroic epics told by the troubadours, Le Combat de Tancred by Monteverdi plunges us into a mythical universe, filled with violence and passion. This form of musical theatre, extremely innovative at the start of the Baroque era, made Monteverdi the very first of contemporary playwrights, uniting music and text together as vectors of pure and timeless emotions.
It is a question here of love and hate, of war and peace, and above all of reconciliation. The long fight of the knight Tancred against Clorinde, clad in armor and unrecognizable in the guise of a man, is told to us by a narrator whose panting song and upset speech make the spectator participate in the drama which unfolds before their eyes. The “suspense” of this warlike and amorous joust keeps you going until the last minute.
In accordance with the composer's instructions, who recommended accompanying his Combattimento with a piece "to sing and dance", Le Bal des Ingrates is also presented.In this mythological fantasy, Pluto lets out of hell for a short time, at the request of Venus, the "ungrateful" who have not loved enough during their earthly life for them to realize their error. A slight snub to sacrificed existences, as a counterpoint to the violence of the torments of love evoked in Le Combat de Tancred et de Clorinde.
Jérôme Correas, director of the ensemble Les Paladins, and Dan Jemmett, director, orchestrate these two works in the same spirit, making singers and musicians the committed actors of this theater of passions.

Semblable aux héroïques épopées que racontaient les troubadours, Le Combat de Tancrède de Monteverdi nous plonge dans un univers mythique, empli de violence et de passion. Cette forme de théâtre musical, extrêmement novatrice en ce début de l’époque baroque, fait de Monteverdi le tout premier des dramaturges contemporains, unissant ensemble la musique et le texte comme des vecteurs d’émotions pures et intemporelles.
Il est question ici d’amour et de haine, de guerre et de paix, et surtout de réconciliation. Le long combat du chevalier Tancrède contre Clorinde, revêtue d’une armure et méconnaissable sous une apparence d’homme, nous est conté par un narrateur dont le chant haletant et la parole bouleversée font participer le spectateur au drame qui se déroule sous leurs yeux. Le « suspense » de cette joute guerrière et amoureuse tient en haleine jusqu’à la dernière minute.
Conformément aux instructions du compositeur, qui recommandait d’accompagner son Combattimento d’une pièce « à chanter et à danser », est présenté en sus Le Bal des Ingrates. Dans cette fantaisie mythologique, Pluton laisse sortir pour un court instant des enfers, à la demande de Vénus, les « ingrates » n’ayant pas assez aimé durant leur vie terrestre afin qu’elles réalisent leur erreur. Un pied de nez léger aux existences sacrifiées, en contrepoint à la violence des tourments amoureux évoqués dans Le Combat de Tancrède et de Clorinde.
Jérôme Correas, directeur de l’ensemble Les Paladins, et Dan Jemmett, metteur en scène, orchestrent ces deux oeuvres dans un même élan, faisant des chanteurs et musiciens les acteurs engagés de ce théâtre des passions.
