Love, war and violence, eroticism, jealousy and intrigues, lust for power, tests of courage and grand visions: With »Il Giustino«, Antonio Vivaldi has created an action-packed and emotionally charged stage spectacle about the rise of the young peasant Giustino to the top of Roman politics, in which there is no only Byzantine heroines, but also bears, sea monsters and voices speaking from graves.

The 1920s saw the extraordinary rediscovery of a large number of Vivaldi's operas, including Il Giustino. The find of the manuscripts sheds new light on the work of Vivaldi, who is best known as a composer of Baroque instrumental music,
but is largely unknown as an opera composer. The score comprises almost a hundred imaginative, contrasting arias and recitatives, into which Vivaldi has artfully woven quotations from earlier works.

Liebe, Krieg und Gewalt, Erotik, Eifersucht und Intrigen, Machtgier, Mutproben und große Visionen: Mit »Il Giustino« entwirft Antonio Vivaldi ein actionreiches und affektgeladenes Bühnenspektakel über den Aufstieg des jungen Bauern Giustino an die Spitze der römischen Politik, in dem sich nicht nur byzantinische Heldinnen, sondern auch Bären, Meeresungeheuer und aus Gräbern sprechende Stimmen zu Wort melden.

In den 1920er Jahren ereignete sich die außergewöhnliche Wiederentdeckung einer großen Anzahl der von Vivaldi komponierten Opern, darunter auch »Il Giustino«. Der Fund der Manuskripte wirft ein neues Licht auf das Schaffen Vivaldis, der vor allem als Komponist von Instrumentalmusik des Barock Bekanntheit erfährt,
als Opernkomponist aber weitgehend unbekannt ist. Nahezu einhundert einfallsreiche, kontrastierende Arien und Rezitative umfasst die Partitur, in die Vivaldi kunstvoll Zitate früherer Werke eingewoben hat.
