Der Kaufmann Geronimo wünscht sich zu seinem Lebensglück einen Adelstitel. Dafür hat ihm sein Gehilfe Paolino den Grafen Robinson vermittelt, der bereit ist, für 100.000 Scudi Geronimos älteste Tochter Elisetta zu heiraten. Bei der Brautschau verliebt sich der Graf jedoch in Carolina, deren jüngere Schwester. Carolina weist ihn zurück, aber ihr Vater wird mit dem Grafen handelseinig und überlässt ihm die Jüngere für die Hälfte der Summe. Carolina verweigert die Heirat, aber als sich auch noch ihre Tante Paolino zum Gatten wählen will, hilft nur noch ein Fluchtplan. Denn niemand weiß, dass Carolina und Paolino eine heimliche Ehe führen.

Cimarosa gilt als Meister der Opera buffa und Wegbereiter Rossinis. Sein Ruhm in Neapel führte zur Anstellung als Hofkapellmeister in Sankt Petersburg und später in Wien, wo 1792 seine bis heute meistgespielte Oper „Il matrimonio segreto“ uraufgeführt wurde.

The merchant Geronimo wishes for a noble title for his happiness in life. His assistant Paolino found him Count Robinson, who is willing to marry Geronimo's eldest daughter Elisetta for 100,000 scudi. However, while looking for a bride, the Count falls in love with Carolina, her younger sister. Carolina rejects him, but her father comes to terms with the count and lets him have the younger one for half the price. Carolina refuses to marry, but when her aunt Paolino also wants to choose her husband, only an escape plan helps. Because no one knows that Carolina and Paolino are secretly married.

Cimarosa is considered a master of opera buffa and a pioneer of Rossini. His fame in Naples led to his appointment as court conductor in Saint Petersburg and later in Vienna, where his opera “Il matrimonio segreto”, which is still the most frequently performed, was premiered in 1792.
