In an imaginary Dutch island, there is a country of bells, because on each house there is a small bell, ready to signal if one spouse is cheating on the other. Life flows quietly until the arrival of an English military ship, forced to dock in the port of the island by a fire that has developed on board. The ship's officers go ashore and the inevitable happens! Hans, the commander, finds himself ringing the bell with Nela, Tom makes him ring with Bonbon, John with Elena and La Gaffe for an unforgivable mistake with Pomerania, the ugliest woman in the country.
In a short time, however, another boat arrives, with the wives of the officers, who in turn, to take revenge, make the bells ring, chatting with the husbands of Nela, Bonbon, Elena and Pomerania. Lightly the story continues in that alternation of music, acting and current affairs that makes the operetta a carefree genre that is always very popular with the public.

In un’immaginaria isola olandese esiste il Paese dei campanelli, perché su ogni casa vi è un piccolo campanello, pronto a segnalare se un coniuge tradisce l’altro. La vita scorre tranquilla fino all’arrivo di una nave militare inglese, costretta all’attracco nel porto dell’isola da un incendio sviluppatosi a bordo. Gli ufficiali della nave scendono a terra e capita l’inevitabile! Hans, il comandante, si scopre a far suonare il campanello con Nela, Tom lo fa suonare con Bonbon, John con Elena e La Gaffe per un imperdonabile errore con Pomerania, la donna più brutta del paese.
In poco tempo approda però un’altra imbarcazione, con le mogli degli ufficiali, che a loro volta, per vendicarsi fanno suonare i campanelli, intrattenendosi con i mariti di Nela, Bonbon, Elena e Pomerania. Con leggerezza la vicenda continua in quell’alternanza di musica, recitazione ed attualità che rende l’operetta un genere spensierato sempre molto gradito al pubblico.
