Salzburg 1771: For the 50th anniversary of the Salzburg archbishop's priesthood, the 15-year-old Mozart wrote the azione teatrale "Il sogno di Scipione" (Scipio's dream) in just under four months. However, because the archbishop died before the celebrations, Mozart reworked the one-act play for the enthronement of his successor. He uses an older text by Pietro Metastasio from 1735, which is based on a dream story from Cicero's "De re publica". The librettist combines the ancient myth of this story with an admonition to those in power to put their professional duties before their personal inclinations - then as now of great importance for politics.

Mozart's choice of subject could be autobiographical, after all his father also pursued the goal of guiding his son with a strict hand and leading him on the chosen path in life, without taking into account the private wishes of the young person. So he knew the decision in favor of duty; this creates a connection to its protagonist.

In a dream, the ancient hero Scipio, the conqueror of Carthage in 146 BC, appears. BC, the goddesses Fortuna (luck) and Costanza (constancy). They give him the choice of choosing one of the two as a lifelong companion. In order to take him for himself, each describes the possibilities that offer themselves to the one who follows her: The goddesses show the dreaming the picture of the eternal sky. There his father Aemilius and his ancestor Publius appear to him, who remind him of the responsibility of man and urge him not to neglect earthly tasks and virtue. They exhort him to emulate their professional example and thus to consistency. Under the impression of this encounter with the past and the threats of luck, also to be responsible for all misfortune, Scipio decides to to follow persistence. Before the outburst of rage of the moody Fortuna, whose angry signs beset the hero, Scipio awakens. The soprano of homage expresses the moral at the end: Actually, Scipio was not meant at all, but the prince, in whose honor Mozart composed the piece, and whose great merit is sung about here.
