Azucena musste einst die Verbrennung ihrer Mutter als Hexe mit ansehen. Aus Rache entführte sie den jüngeren der beiden Söhne des dafür verantwortlichen alten Grafen Luna, warf dann aber – was niemand weiß – im Wahn irrtümlich nicht diesen, sondern den eigenen Sohn in die Flammen. Jahre später kämpfen der neue Graf Luna, der Bruder des Entführten, und der »Troubadour« Manrico, der vermeintliche Sohn Azucenas, nicht nur im Bürgerkrieg auf opponierenden Seiten, sondern geraten zudem auch aneinander, weil sie beide die Hofdame Leonora lieben. Niemand ahnt, dass Manrico in Wahrheit der entführte Bruder Lunas ist – bis Leonora sich selbst für den Geliebten opfert und der hasserfüllte Luna den Rivalen tötet.

Fasziniert von den »starken Situationen«, die sich aus dieser bizarren Handlungs- und Figurenkonstellation sowie aus der »Neuheit und Kühnheit des spanischen Dramas« ergaben, schuf Giuseppe Verdi ein Werk voll hinreißender Belcanto-Nummern und elaboriert-dramatischem Orchesterpart, die wahre Begeisterungsstürme auslösten. Zwar erntete die sprunghafte und recht unglaubwürdige Handlung der Oper wohl nicht zu unrecht immer wieder Anlass für Kritik, doch boten die von Gräueltaten, Rachegelüsten, Wahn, Eifersucht, Liebe, Verzweiflung und Hass geprägten Szenen dem Komponisten Anlass zur Komposition äußerst ausdrucksstarker Melodien, emotionsgeladener Arien und effektvoller Chöre, die »Il trovatore« zu einem wahrhaft packenden Sängerfest machen.

Azucena once witnessed her mother being burned as a witch. In revenge, she kidnapped the younger of the two sons of the old Count Luna who was responsible for this, but then – which nobody knows – in madness she mistakenly threw her own son into the flames instead of him. Years later, the new Count Luna, the abductee's brother, and the "troubadour" Manrico, Azucena's supposed son, not only fight on opposing sides in the civil war, but also clash because they both love the lady-in-waiting Leonora. No one suspects that Manrico is actually Luna's kidnapped brother - until Leonora sacrifices herself for her lover and the hateful Luna kills her rival.

Fascinated by the "powerful situations" that resulted from this bizarre plot and character constellation and by the "novelty and boldness of Spanish drama", Giuseppe Verdi created a work full of enchanting bel canto numbers and an elaborately dramatic orchestral part that unleashed true storms of enthusiasm . Although the erratic and quite unbelievable plot of the opera was not unjustly criticized again and again, the scenes characterized by atrocities, desire for revenge, madness, jealousy, love, despair and hate gave the composer an opportunity to compose extremely expressive melodies and emotionally charged arias and effective choirs that make »Il trovatore« a truly gripping song festival.
