What does a novelist do when he can't think of a story? In the hope of inspiration, he studies the people around him. And when the beautiful “Turk in Italy” arrives, they get caught up in all sorts of sentimentalism, much to the delight of the writer. Zaida loves the Turk Selim, who has fallen in love with Fiorilla, unfortunately she is married to Don Geronio and is also adored by Don Narciso. So who gets who? An exciting and funny affair for the poet Prosdocimo as well as for the audience.

Was macht ein Romanautor, wenn ihm keine Geschichte einfällt? In der Hoffnung auf Inspiration studiert er die Menschen in seinem Umfeld. Und die verwickeln sich durch die Ankunft des schönen „Türken in Italien“ in allerlei Gefühlsduseleien, ganz zur Freude des Schreiberlings. Zaida liebt den Türken Selim, dieser hat sich in Fiorilla verguckt, dummerweise ist die mit Don Geronio verheiratet und wird dazu noch von Don Narciso angehimmelt. Wer kriegt also wen? Für den Dichter Prosdocimo wie für das Publikum eine spannende und lustige Angelegenheit.
