Philip Glass is one of the most important representatives of contemporary music. His works have long been part of the international repertoire in concert and ballet, in film music and not least in music theater. For his chamber opera In der Penal Colony, which premiered in Seattle in 2000, Glass drew on Franz Kafka's story of the same name, published in 1919. In it, an explorer witnesses the public execution of a convict.

 
An argument about torture, guilt, just punishment and the system develops between him and the responsible officer. The focus of the action is the apparatus, a machine of technical progress and human creativity, at the same time a tool of systematic oppression and inhumanity. The story, which hasn't lost any of its explosiveness to this day, is transformed by Glass' minimal music into a nightmare that won't let go of the audience and makes their blood run cold.

Aileen Schneider , a talented young director, who has already staged the children's opera »Die Große Wortfabrik« as well as numerous smaller formats with empathy and poetic power in the foyer of the martini park, will realize this dark and haunting chamber opera in an artistic way on the brechtbühne im Gaswerk .
