At the turn of the year there really is joy! Because there is hardly any other work that is better suited for this than Beethoven's ninth symphony - a humanitarian work of confession that has had a lasting impact on music history. However, Debussy once said: »The 'Ninth Symphony' was shrouded in a fog of lofty words and embellishing epithets. It's the most nonsensical masterpiece, along with the famous 'Smile of the Mona Lisa', to which the label 'mysterious' is attached with strange persistence. One only has to wonder that it hasn't long since been buried under the mass of writing that it caused.« But it may be precisely because of all this "writing" that hardly any other composition exists which unfolds such a dazzling long-term effect - and it has become an annual tradition all over the country to play it on New Year's Eve. Because Beethoven's sparkling opus magnum conveys an important message in a psychological symphonic journey "through night to light" that is regularly recalled. A musical plea together with the catchy setting of Schiller's "Ode to Joy", which with exuberant pathos evokes the ideal of a society of equals, connected by the bond of joy and friendship. Nathalie Stutzmann became known internationally as an alto player, but has also conducted leading orchestras for years. Sir Simon Rattle judges: »Nathalie is the real thing. So much love, intensity and sheer technique. We need more conductors like her.«

Zum Jahreswechsel kommt wahrlich Freude auf! Denn es gibt kaum ein anderes Werk, welches besser dafür geeignet ist als Beethovens neunte Symphonie – ein humanitäres Bekenntniswerk, das die Musikgeschichte nachhaltig geprägt hat. Allerdings formulierte Debussy auch einmal: »Man hat die ›Neunte Symphonie‹ in einen Nebel von hohen Worten und schmückenden Beiworten gehüllt. Sie ist – neben dem berühmten ›Lächeln der Mona Lisa‹, dem mit seltsamer Beharrlichkeit das Etikett ›geheimnisvoll‹ anhaftet – das Meisterwerk, über das am meisten Unsinn verbreitet wurde. Man muss sich nur wundern, dass es unter dem Wust von Geschreibe, den es hervorgerufen hat, nicht schon längst begraben liegt.« Aber möglicherweise liegt es gerade an diesem vielen »Geschreibe«, dass kaum eine andere Komposition existiert, die eine derart schillernde Langzeitwirkung entfaltet – und es landauf, landab zur alljährlichen Tradition geworden ist, sie gerade an Silvester zu spielen. Denn Beethovens funkensprühendes Opus Magnum vermittelt in einer psychologischen Symphonie-Reise »durch Nacht zum Licht« eine wichtige Botschaft, die gerne regelmäßig in Erinnerung gerufen wird. Ein musikalisches Plädoyer mitsamt der eingängigen Vertonung von Schillers »Ode an die Freude«, die mit überschwänglichem Pathos das Ideal einer Gesellschaft von Gleichberechtigten beschwört, verbunden durch das Band der Freude und der Freundschaft. Wie meinte Beethoven doch einst: »Keiner, dem sich meine Musik wirklich erschlossen hat, wird jemals wieder ganz elend werden können.«

Nathalie Stutzmann wurde international als Altistin bekannt, steht aber bereits seit Jahren auch als Dirigentin vor führenden Orchestern. Sir Simon Rattle urteilt: »Nathalie is the real thing. So much love, intensity and sheer technique. We need more conductors like her.«
