Mascagni: Iris - Kyoto: Carmine Monaco d'Ambrosìa - 2018

Per la prima volta assoluta, a quasi 120 anni dalla sua première avvenuta a Roma nel 1898, Iris di Pietro Mascagni torna sulle scene con una coproduzione tra Italia e Giappone: a volerlo il Teatro della sua città natale, il Goldoni di Livorno che insieme agli altri due Teatri di Tradizione della Toscana ha trovato nel Kansai Nikikai Opera Theater di Osaka un partner entusiasta ad affrontare il primo titolo del melodramma italiano ambientato in Giappone, ma pressoché sconosciuto nel loro paese. Soltanto due rappresentazioni, entrambe a Tokio e prodotte dai giapponesi: la prima nel Teatro Nissei nell’agosto 1985 e poi trenta anni dopo, nel 2015 (ma in forma di concerto) diretta dal M° Andrea Battiston, direttore principale della Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. Una rarità, quindi, ma che ha riscosso un grande successo di pubblico ad Osaka nell’anteprima di fine maggio, con due rappresentazioni sold out accolte da oltre 4.000 spettatori.
Non resta ora che seguirla nella tournée nei nostri teatri: il debutto è atteso per sabato 16 dicembre, alle ore 20.30 (con replica domenica 17, alle ore 16.30) al Teatro Goldoni di Livorno a cui seguirà ad inizio anno il Verdi di Pisa (13 e 14 gennaio) ed il Giglio di Lucca (10 e 11 febbraio).
Altra rarità anche per i nostri palcoscenici: per la prima volta in un teatro italiano, l’opera giapponese di Mascagni è firmata da un regista proveniente dal paese del Sol Levante, Hiroki Ihara, uomo di teatro già noto in Italia per alcune produzioni operistiche di successo (tra cui le pucciniane Butterfly e Turandot), mentre la parte musicale è curata da un interprete di grande esperienza verista quale il milanese Daniele Agiman, direttore principale per il repertorio italiano proprio all’ Opera di Osaka.
Il cast è il risultato del Mascagni Opera Studio, il progetto del Teatro Goldoni che si è avvalso della preziosa collaborazione del Rotary Club Livorno e si è concluso con una masterclass condotta dal soprano di fama internazionale Paoletta Marrocu, che sarà la prima Iris sul palcoscenico.
Nasce così una Iris caratterizzata dalla raffinata sensibilità interpretativa tutta italiana con la fedeltà alle indicazioni mascagnane del M° Agiman che proporrà una versione integrale dell’opera, senza alcun taglio della partitura e l’elegante, pittorica stilizzazione drammaturgica giapponese della lettura registica di Ihara, incline a sottolineare le atmosfere di favola crudele proprio dell’opera mascagnana e la solitudine visionaria della figura della protagonista, vittima predestinata della cattiveria spregiudicata del mondo degli adulti.
“Orientalismo, Impressionismo e Decadentismo sono le parole chiavi da utilizzare per questo capolavoro Iris – spiega il regista – a tratti mi sembra che Iris sia più vicina alla Turandot che alla Butterfly. Liù, grande eroina pucciniana della Turandot, ci ha fatto conoscere la forza del sacrificio. Iris ci mostra l’arma più forte del sacrificio: la resistenza passiva dell’innocenza. Alla fine Iris diviene veramente la grande eroina rappresentante la vittima di ogni tipo di sfruttamento e maltrattamento nella vita degli esseri umani”. “Un teatro certo difficile quello di Iris – afferma il direttore d’orchestra Agiman – ma che ripaga ascoltatori e interpreti delle fatiche con una contemplazione rara sul senso ultimo delle cose…”
Interamente nipponica la parte visiva della produzione, affidata scenografie di Sumiko Masuda, i costumi originali di Tamao Asuka e le coreografie di Rina Ikoma.
Doppio il cast impegnato, con alcuni interpreti mutuati dalle rappresentazioni ad Osaka. Manrico Signorini / Fulvio Fonzi (Il Cieco), Paoletta Marrocu/Valentina Boi (Iris) a cui si aggiungerà Filomena Fittipaldi a Lucca, Paolo Antognetti/Denys Pivnitskyi (Osaka) con Samuele Simoncini ancora per il Giglio, Carmine Monaco d’Ambrosìa/Keisuke Otani (Kyoto), Alessandra Rossi/Kaoru Kiichi (Dhia/Una Guècha) con Maria Salvini e          Chiara Milini negli altri due teatri coproduttori, Didier Pieri/Daisuke Fuijta (Un Cenciaiolo/Un Merciaiolo) con Federico Bulletti al Verdi di Pisa, Tommaso Tomboloni, Marco Innamorati (Due Cenciaioli).

For the very first time, almost 120 years after its première in Rome in 1898, Iris by Pietro Mascagni is back on the scene with a co-production between Italy and Japan : at the behest of the Theater of his hometown, the Goldoni of Livorno which together with two other Tradition Theaters of Tuscany found in the Kansai Nikikai Opera Theater in Osakaan enthusiastic partner to face the first title of the Italian melodrama set in Japan, but almost unknown in their country. Only two performances, both in Tokyo and produced by the Japanese: the first in the Nissei Theater in August 1985 and then thirty years later, in 2015 (but in concert form) conducted by Maestro Andrea Battiston, principal conductor of the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. A rarity, therefore, but which met with great public success in Osaka in the preview at the end of May , with two sold out performances welcomed by over 4,000 spectators.
All that remains now is to follow her on tour in our theaters: the debut is expected forSaturday 16 December, at 8.30 pm (with a repeat on Sunday 17, at 4.30 pm) at the Teatro Goldoni in Livorno which will be followed at the beginning of the year by Verdi in Pisa (13 and 14 January) and Giglio in Lucca (10 and 11 February).
Another rarity also for our stages: for the first time in an Italian theater, the Japanese opera by Mascagni is signed by a director from the country of the Rising Sun , Hiroki Ihara , a theater man already known in Italy for some opera productions of success (including Puccini's Butterfly and Turandot ), while the musical part is curated by a highly experienced realist interpreter such as the MilaneseDaniele Agiman, principal conductor for the Italian repertoire at the Osaka Opera.
The cast is the result of the Mascagni Opera Studio , the Teatro Goldoni project which made use of the precious collaboration of the Rotary Club Livorno and ended with a masterclass conducted by the internationally renowned soprano Paoletta Marrocu , who will be the first Iris on stage.
Thus was born an Iris characterized by the refined all-Italian interpretative sensitivity with fidelity to Mascagna's indications of Maestro Agiman who will offer an integral version of the work , without any cut of the scoreand the elegant, pictorial Japanese dramaturgical stylization of Ihara's directorial reading , inclined to underline the cruel fairy tale atmospheres of Mascagna's work and the visionary solitude of the figure of the protagonist, predestined victim of the unscrupulous wickedness of the adult world.
“ Orientalism, Impressionism and Decadence are the keywords to use for this Iris masterpiece – explains the director – at times it seems to me that Iris is closer to Turandot than to Butterfly . Liù, Puccini's great heroine of Turandot, made us aware of the power of sacrifice. Iris shows us the strongest weapon of sacrifice: the passive resistance of innocence. In the end Iris truly becomes the great heroine representing the victim of all kinds of exploitation and mistreatment in the life of human beings”. "A certainly difficult theater that of Iris - says the conductor Agiman - but which repays listeners and interpreters of the efforts with a rare contemplation on the ultimate meaning of things..." The visual part of the production is entirely
Japanese, entrusted to the scenography by Sumiko Masuda , original costumes by Tamao Asuka and choreography by Rina Ikoma .
Double the busy cast, with some performers borrowed from performances in Osaka.
