Oratorio based on Georg Friedrich Handel's Israel in Egypt

Captivating music on the background of a captivating biblical story.

" And the children of Israel saw the great work which the Lord had done upon the Egyptians, and they believed the Lord and his servant Moses ." (Exodus XV).

The Promised Land is the second effort of the international project Let's sing Oratorio Music!, which, with this contemporary reinterpretation of Handel's evocative multi-choral work on an Old Testament theme, aims to attract children, youth and parents to the singing of oratorios, the ultimate genre of classicism. For help, he summons the spirit of Handel's contemporary, the Swedish scientist and mystic Emanuel Swedenborg, who at the end of his extraordinarily fruitful life dedicated to science began to communicate with angels and spirits and, according to his testimony, even met the Messiah himself in heaven. It is therefore difficult to imagine a better guide to the promised land to which the Messiah is calling us.

The project is complemented by the inputs of modern music, the author of which is the contemporary composer Radim Smetana. Together with the choir and orchestra of the Silesian Theater in Opava, soloists who emerged from the international singing competition Musica Sacra, which is organized by our partner Accademia Musicale Europea in Rome, will perform.

The author of the libretto is Charles Jennens, a great admirer and patron of Handel. The basis is Old Testament texts, especially excerpts from the prophecy of Isaiah and the books of Psalms, the two most famous choirs draw their content from the book of Revelation of St. Jana. Premiered on April 13, 1742 in Dublin, Handel's Messiah is one of the most performed compositions of all time. The most famous part of the entire oratorio is the choral "Hallelujah" (Praise the Lord!), which is often performed as a separate concert piece. It is common practice in many countries for the audience to stand during this part. Tradition says that during the first performance of Messiah in London, King George II himself stood up at the first notes of Hallelujah. and the state remained until the end of this section.

The Messiah was also the last concert Handel personally conducted at Covent Garden in London on April 6, 1759, just a few days before his death.

Handel wrote the Messiah for a small choir and orchestra with optional instrumentation for individual numbers. After the composer's death, the work was adapted for large orchestras and choirs. In further efforts to update the oratorio, its expanded orchestration was revised by, for example, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. It was in this arrangement that Handel's Messiah was performed in Prague in 1804 with 170 musicians, including about 80 choir members. The success was huge. The work was created during the summer of 1741, and the composition process itself is surrounded by many legends about the mystical rapture of the working composer, who allegedly did not eat or sleep during the entire composition. However, the indisputable fact leads to these almost mythical stories - Handel created this monumental work in just 24 days. It ought to be mentioned,

Oratorium na motivy díla Georga Friedricha Händela Izrael v Egyptě

Uchvacující hudba na pozadí strhujícího biblického příběhu.

„A Izraelští viděli to velké dílo, které Pán vykonal na Egypťanech, a věřili Pánu a jeho služebníku Mojžíšovi.“ (Exodus XV).

Zaslíbená země je druhým počinem mezinárodního projektu Let’s sing Oratorio Music!, jenž si i touto současnou reinterpretací sugestivního Händelova vícesborového díla na starozákonní téma klade za cíl přitáhnout děti, mládež i rodiče ke zpěvu oratorií, vrcholného žánru klasicismu. Na pomoc si přivolá ducha Händelova současníka, švédského vědce a mystika Emanuela Swedenborga, který na sklonku svého neobyčejně plodného života zasvěceného vědě začal komunikovat s anděly, duchy a podle svého svědectví se v nebi setkal i se samotným Mesiášem. Těžko si proto představit lepšího průvodce zemí zaslíbenou, do níž nás Mesiáš volá.

Projekt je doplněn vstupy moderní hudby, jejíž autorem je současný skladatel Radim Smetana. Společně se sborem a orchestrem Slezského divadla v Opavě se představí sólisté, kteří vzešli z mezinárodní pěvecké soutěže Musica Sacra, jež je organizovaná naším partnerem Accademia Musicale Europea v Římě.

Autorem libreta je velký Händelův obdivovatel a mecenáš Charles Jennens. Základ tvoří starozákonní texty, zejména úryvky z proroctví Izaiášova a knih Žalmů, dva nejznámější sbory obsahově čerpají z knihy Zjevení sv. Jana. Premiéra proběhla 13. dubna 1742 v Dublinu a Händelův Mesiáš je jednou z nejuváděnějších skladeb všech dob. Nejslavnější částí celého oratoria je sborové „Hallelujah“ (Chvalte Pána!), která je často uváděna jako samostatný koncertní kus. V mnoha zemích je již vžitou praxí, že publikum při této části stojí. Tradice totiž říká, že při prvním provedení Mesiáše v Londýně povstal při prvních tónech Hallelujah sám král Jiří II. a stát zůstal až do konce této části.

Mesiáš byl také posledním koncertem, který Händel osobně dirigoval v Covent Garden v Londýně 6. dubna 1759, pouhých pár dní před svou smrtí.

Händel napsal Mesiáše pro nevelký sbor a orchestr s volitelným nástrojovým obsazením jednotlivých čísel.  Po smrti skladatele bylo dílo upraveno pro velké orchestry a sbory. Při dalších snahách o aktualizaci oratoria byla jeho rozšířená orchestrace revidována např. Wolfgangem Amadeem Mozartem. Právě v této úpravě zazněl Händelův Mesiáš v Praze roku 1804 se 170 hudebníky včetně asi 80 členů sboru. Úspěch byl obrovský. Dílo vzniklo během léta 1741 a kompoziční proces samotný je opředen mnoha legendami o mystickém vytržení pracujícího skladatele, který údajně po celý čas kompozice nejedl a nespal. K těmto téměř mytickým příběhům však vede nesporná skutečnost – Händel vytvořil toto monumentální dílo za pouhých 24 dní. Nutno podotknout, že (v souladu s dobovou kompoziční praxí) využíval mnoho témat a motivického materiálu z děl jiných autorů i svých děl starších.
