Die Tänzerin und Choreografin Ida Rubinstein beauftragte Arthur Honegger mit der Komposition von »Jeanne d’Arc au bûcher«, ihr schwebte eine Art Mysterienspiel vor. Als Textdichter war Paul Claudel vorgesehen, der den Auftrag jedoch zunächst ablehnte. Nachdem der gläubige Katholik auf einer Zugfahrt von einer Vision ereilt wurde, bei der ihm ein Bild von gefesselten Mädchenhänden erschien, die das Kreuzzeichen machten, nahm er den Auftrag doch an. Honeggers »Dramatisches Oratorium« vereint Stilelemente von Oper, Schauspiel und Oratorium. So gibt es neben den Singstimmen zahlreiche Sprechrollen, allen voran die der Jeanne d’Arc. Für die beiden konzertanten Aufführungen der Staatsoper Hamburg in der Laeiszhalle konnte Opernintendantin Simone Young die französische Schauspiellegende Fanny Ardant gewinnen. Die (konzertante) Uraufführung von »Jeanne d’Arc au bûcher« fand 1938 in Basel statt, 1942 wurde in Zürich erstmals eine szenische Produktion gezeigt. In Hamburg wurde das Werk erstmals 1950 aufgeführt, die Inszenierung stammte von Günther Rennert.

The dancer and choreographer Ida Rubinstein commissioned Arthur Honegger to compose »Jeanne d'Arc au bûcher«, she had in mind a kind of mystery play. Paul Claudel was intended as the lyricist, but he initially refused the job. After the devout Catholic was caught on a train journey by a vision in which a picture of a girl's hands bound up making the sign of the cross appeared to him, he accepted the commission. Honegger's "Dramatic Oratorio" combines stylistic elements of opera, drama and oratorio. In addition to the singing voices, there are numerous speaking roles, above all that of Joan of Arc. Opera director Simone Young was able to win over French acting legend Fanny Ardant for the two concert performances of the Hamburg State Opera in the Laeiszhalle. The (concert) premiere of »Jeanne d'Arc au bûcher« took place in Basel in 1938, and in 1942 a staged production was shown for the first time in Zurich. The work was first performed in Hamburg in 1950 and was staged by Günther Rennert.
